Subject: OSH RV Landings
Since I canceled my trip to OSH this year I decided to get a taste of OSH by listening to both the North & South Towers and watch landings on both 18-36 & 09-27 Web cams. The Webcams do not provide any real detail, in fact I did watch one web cam zoom in on two port-a-potties for about 30 minutes but the Tower Frequencies are instructive & entertaining. The most interesting thing about the tower frequencies is that fully 1/3 to 1/2 of all calls seem to be RVs! Here's a tip for EVERYONE: Type in www.worldcat.org in your browser's address line, type in the name of the book you want to borrow through inter-library loan (free, from any library in the world, even Russia), next page will list variations of that book in a list, starting with latest editions, then earlier. click on one that is close to what you want; at resulting web page, scroll down slightly to the "Find a copy in the library" section and enter your zip code in the "enter your location" line and click "Find libraries" - the list starting just below this line is now re-ordered to show libraries having the book sorted in order of "closest to you" (shows mileage to library) then next closest, etc. . . . Then, be sure to scroll down slightly to the next section of that page, "Buyit" and you will find this particular book by Osinga currently costs $128 from Amazon - a real incentive to call your local library and arrange FREE interlibrary loan of the book. Back on to an "RV-List" topic, anyone want to hear about my errors in cross wind takeoff techniques? - and resulting lessons learned from snap rolling my former RV-6 (tail dragger & tip up canopy) on liftoff on takeoff in a strong crosswind and landing upside down on the centerline, sliding off the runway upside down and crawling out from under? If you klnow how to search the NTSB reports look at 5 April 2010, event at Muleshoe, Texas, airport. David Carter ________________________________________________________________________________

From: thomas sargent <sarg314(at)gmail.com>
I just did my dual training in an rv-7A with a constant speed prop and am about to fly my RV-6A with a fixed pitch Catto prop. The take offs in these things have amazing acceleration. With the constant speed plane I tended to always lift the nose too high and had to ease it down. I guess I had the stick back too far and it starts to be effective all at once so the nose would lift real fast. In retrospect it occurs to me that perhaps the take off elevator trim was set too nose heavy. How should the trim be set for take off? Should the tab be just in trail with the elevator? -- Tom Sargent ________________________________________________________________________________

Tom, For my 6A, MT 3 Blade CS, I neutral the elev and ail trims. With the stick back to be gentle on the nose gear, it does want to get in the air pretty fast - I need to push the stick a little forward as it gets light on the gear or it jumps and settles....grass strip. YMMV! Tom, I think that depends on your CG and chosen rotation speed (and flap setting) - it's experimentally derived at, and consists of whatever it takes to trim out the aft stick forces in a Vy climb that particular day. I know where it is on my trim tab indicator gauge, but that has no bearing on your ship. I also find it very easy to override trim forces at climb-out speeds, so a mis-set trim on takeoff is hardly noteworthy - just stick the nose where experience tells you it needs to be and see where the IAS settles, to make sure. The stick forces are light enough during the take-off that you should be able to put the stick wherever you need it to achieve the desired aircraft pitch response, no matter where the trim is set. Personally, I set the trim so that the aircraft will be approximately in trim when I am doing my initial climb right after take-off. That means the position I set the trim tab depends on whether I am solo or dual, as the CG of my RV-8 varies quite a bit between these conditions. It took a few flights of experimenting before I learned where the trim needs to be for various CG locations. -- Kevin Horton Ottawa, Canada On Thu, Jul 29, 2010 at 11:53, thomas sargent wrote: > I just did my dual training in an rv-7A with a constant speed prop and am > about to fly my RV-6A with a fixed pitch Catto prop. If we're taking guesses, my guess is cross-controlled during a crosswind takeoff...with premature takeoff, stall, and thus the "snap". Tom: The RV nose wheel assembly will not tolerate a lot of abuse; I try to get the weight off it as soon as possible on takeoff, especially on rough runways, and to keep the weight off it as long as possible on landing. I have no experience with the 6, but with the 7 the elevator and rudder both become effective early in the takeoff role. For takeoff, you'll learn early on where to hold the nose to keep the weight off the nose gear, and of course to compensate for left yaw with right rudder. With the nose just slightly high I let it fly off; keep the nose low enough to allow the aircraft to accelerate in ground effect; then set up a climb at 100 kts and trim as required. (Of couse - on short fields and/or if you need to clear an obstacle the technique is different.) Elevator trim has never been an issue; I eyeball the trim tab during preflight to be sure it isn't in some extreme position. Otherwise I leave it whereever it was for landing and adjust it for climbout when convenient; stick forces are not that significant and are easily dealt with. I have electric trim. My 6A has manual trim and I set it at nutral for takeoff and of course on landing, crank in a lot to basically come down the chute with minimal stick work. Importaint thing for me is to always crank it back to nutral as part of shut down. Early on I got a few wake up charlie's when on takeoff the nose pops up mucho to quicko. ________________________________________________________________________________

I have a 6A with a constant speed prop. Solo, I set the elevator trim about three clicks nose down from neutral for take off. It makes the stick a bit nose heavy at nosewheel lift off, but completely manageable. The stick forces become neutral very quickly after lift off and as I accelerate past 100 KIAS it takes even more nose down trim to keep the stick forces neutral. With a pax, I usually position the elevator trim to neutral; however, I find that I must start trimming the nose down pretty quickly after lift off to keep the stick forces neutral. I've intentionally flown my bird with full up and full down elevator trim at both slow and high speeds. Regardless, full trim produces an uncomfortable amount of stick force, but is completely and easily controllable at all speed ranges. I wouldn't want to fly long distances with full up or down trim, but it could easily and safely be done. I've also found that full up or down elevator trim makes not a bit of difference in take off performance, and the nose is easily held at the right climb angle regardless of stick force. Anybody have the Koger Sun Shades for a slider RV? Any installation problems? Any interference with open or closing the slider? Are they worth the price - $160 each from Van's? Charlie - I put a Koger shade in my -6A a couple months ago after flying since October 2008 without one, and yes the price seems a bit high but I'm glad I have it. It works great, is convenient / easy to adjust as needed, and is easy to install. No regrets, and I consider it money well spent. Mine is a tip up, not a slider, so can't speak to those questions but have a friend with a -6 slider that has one installed and he's just as happy with it. Most of the folks I know have them. Mine has given good service for 13 years flying 2500 hours. Well worth the money. FOOTNOTE. Stopped in boone Iowa for a refueling coming home from osh two days ago. A gentleman inspected my sun shade very carefully, since he recognized it as an early model. It was Ralph Koger. He didn't get to osh this year as he is stlll recovering from a stroke. He is doing well and his business is thriving. The light sport industry has discovered his shade. He just got an order for 50 from Czech republic. My opinion. from the iPhone of D. Walsh On Aug 1, 2010, at 13:38, Charles Brame wrote: > > Anybody have the Koger Sun Shades for a slider RV? One clarification Charlie - your email sounds like you think you'd have to buy two, one for each side, but it's just one assembly for $160 that covers both sides. Shade rides on a rail at canopy centerline and extends to both sides covering pilot and passenger. Dear Listers, I'm in the market for a top-notch canopy cover for the RV-8. I'm wanting the highest quality materials and workmanship on the product. I want it for overnight trips where it might rain so it needs to completely cover the front baggage door. When folded up, I don't want it to completely fill the limited rear baggage area in the RV-8, either. I Google RV-8 Canopy Cover as well as looked at Van's Online catalog, and there seems to be plenty of "options", but I'm looking for some empirical data on quality, fit, and stowage. I've used AviationCovers.com out of Arlington, Washington and have been extremely happy. They just made a set of Hangar Jammies for the RV-7 and they're great. My "traveling" strap on canopy cover is light enough but weather resistant. It covers the tip up hinge opening area as well and keeps things dry. Got to get it tight, though, or it flaps. Hi Matt- This is a bit of a tangent, but I though you (and perhaps others) might find it useful. I have an -8 with an IO-360 and heavy prop, so fwd CG is a consideration. I would like to be able to (among other things) camp at OSH with tent and sleeping bags, while still having someone in the second seat. My solution was to hinge the aft baggage aft bulkhead to fold forward / flat and continue the aft baggage deck aft to the next frame. This allows me quite a bit of volume for high bulk / low density items like sleeping bags or canopy covers, without any undue aft CG hazard. I agree with the comment that if you fly often enough, a maintainer probably isn't necessary, but that's not the question you asked. Bob on the Aeroelectric list recommends the Schumacher 1562A. It's about $20 from Walmart. It's something like 1.5 amps, so it is not a quick charger, but it will lower the voltage once the battery is fully charged. I currently have three of them for various things to keep the batteries charged when the snow flies! Search one the Aeroelctric list here: http://www.matronics.com/search/ Use the keyword "Schumacher" and you'll get lots of hits. - Paul -----Original Message----- From: owner-rv-list-server(at)matronics.com [mailto:owner-rv-list-server(at)matronics.com] On Behalf Of Wade Roe Sent: Thursday, August 05, 2010 10:51 Subject: RV-List: Battery Maintainer for RV7 I'm looking for recommendations regarding a battery maintainer/charger for the Odyssey battery in my RV7. Subject: Firewall Pass Through w/Service Loop Concept
Having recently had to re-wire and reconfigure some electrical on both side s of my firewall I am convinced there is a simpler (but more expensive) way t o access wires coming through the firewall. My current configuration are a couple of Cannon or Amphenol connectors used as my firewall pass through. I assume most of us have a similar configuration. While this is not too difficult as one is building, changes after flying can be extremely difficult due to all the =93aviation=94 crap in the way. The firewall side can be difficult but the upside down and backwards nature of under panel repairs begs for a better solution. It seem s like a simple service loop on both sides of the panel would be a easy fix. The service loop of 12-18=94 would allow one to remotely mount the connector(s) to a position of better access. Or firewall mounting with a release bracket to give better access to the wires. My ideal setup would be either 36-48 pre-wired jumper lengths. Maybe all on e gauge wire or half one gauge, half smaller gauge wires. A couple of pass through units should be enough to solve most wiring issues. My question is=85 Does this solution already exist or are people doing something else to solve this challenge that I don=92t know about? Just use the stainless tube idea (as seen on this list) & run the wire continuous from the engine side to the cockpit side connector. Les, if that reply is in reference to my concept I don=92t see the function al difference between mine the traditional construction. I think that the real answer to your question would be to use the tube method as mentioned, and use one long wire through the firewall. No need for the firewall connectors in that case. Especially if you plan to re-wire the connectors to extend them. If you decide to go the tube route, use a q-tip to spread a thin film of red silicone inside the tube. When all the wires are in, fill the forward end with red silicone .... not the whole tube. Makes it easier to add more wires later. If you just extend the wires from the bulkhead, you still have the same problem when you go to add wires ..... and you pay a cost and weight penalty. The weight is not much (cost is) but it all adds up. According to the engineers at Odyssey, you are better off never charging your PC680 than using a Battery Tender or Battery Tender Jr. Something about the maintained voltage not being high enough and the 680 will eventually "learn" a lower top end voltage. The Odyssey folks recommend their charger designed specifically for Odyssey batteries. The Schumacker 1562A from WalMart is a good substitute, according to Electric Bob on the Aeroelectric list. Subject: van's oil temp. gauge
From: thomas sargent <sarg314(at)gmail.com>
I have a VM1000 engine monitor in my 6A. It's good, but it provides a single point failure for all of my engine instruments. So, I also added a Van's oil temp., oil pressure and voltage steam gauges. The VM1000 temp. probe is mounted in the IO-360 in the usual place and the probe for the Van's gauge is mounted in one of the unused oil pan drain plugs - it's had a 1/8 npt hole drilled and tapped through it for the probe. A man with 2 watches never knows what time it is and a man with 2 oil temp. gauges doesn't know his oil temperature. The Van's gauge has always read higher. Yesterday (the plane's 3rd flight) the VM1000 showed 201 deg. oil T. and the Van's gauge showed 240 - just shy of red-line. The cyl. head temps were 380 and exhaust gas was in the 1200's so I think the engine was OK. I think the Van's gauge is just wrong, but I throttled back anyway and returned to the airport. The VM1000 temp went down to about 193 and the Van's gauge went down to about 220 - a disproportionate change. Tonight I'll go to the hangar and try to calibrate the 2 gauges with a cup of hot water. So, here are my questions: Am I correct that the normal Lycoming oil temp probe location measures the oil temp. just before the oil goes into the oil cooler? If I had 2 accurate temp. gauges, shouldn't I expect the oil in the oil pan to show a temperature that is lower than the temp just before the oil goes into the cooler? -- Tom Sargent ________________________________________________________________________________

Subject: Re: van's oil temp. gauge
From: thomas sargent <sarg314(at)gmail.com>
Well, I have to respond to my own post - I just learned something about Lycomings I didn't know. The normal Lyc. temp probe location measures oil temp just AFTER it comes out of the oil cooler. The sump temperature is the hottest oil temp. It can be expected to be 20 or 30 deg. hotter than the normal probe location. So, I'm thinking the Van's gauge is probably not very accurate, but was reading much closer to correct than I thought. Subject: Wooden Gearleg stiffener installation
Listers, I am getting ready to install the wooden gearleg stiffeners that I purchased from Turtlewood Designs. They came to the specified length and I am rebonding them as they came apart during shipping. During initial fitting, I found that they are about two inches too long to fit my 6A. There is only room for about 25" worth. My first question, should I cut the narrow end shorter, the wider end shorter, or both ends half the difference? I am thinking trimming the narrower end will make the assembly a gozillionth percent stiffer and cutting the wider end will have the opposite effect...I'm inclined to cut the narrower end. Second question, I have my brake lines installed RV7A style in that the fitting comes through the floor forward of the gear and the line runs down the forward side of the leg. Is there a difference in placing the wood on the aft side vs. the forward side? I am thinking the aft side would be better as that would place the stiffener in compression with weight on the wheels. Do any of you that have installed these have the instructions in electronic format to e-mail to me, I seem to have misplaced my originals during a recent hangar move. Thanks for your assistance, Ralph Capen RV6A N822AR @ N06 79.8 hrs nosegear is all faired up - just got the mainwheel pants on. ________________________________________________________________________________

Subject: RV-7A project for sale or trade for RV-12 kit
Date: Aug 10, 2010
I've decided to sell my RV-7A project. It's dragged on and on, and I've lost interest in completing it. I have more interest in just flying my Challenger II. The RV-7A is about 80% done. Engine is Subaru WRX STi 2.5 L supercharged. All the bugs are worked out of the original Eggenfellner product. Most Eggenfellner-supplied components have been replaced; SDS ECU, custom radiators, new wiring harness, supercharger gearing. Engine runs great, and all it needs is probably some more fine-tuning of the SDS ECU. John Moody in Australia has been flying his awhile. Includes latest Gen3 rev 4 PSRU, installed. Includes MT7 electric prop, installed. Three EFIS systems installed - Blue Mountain "gold box" EFIS/One, GRT Horizon, and Dynon D10. Blue Mountain AP installed. GRT EIS installed Full Garmin stack trays and Sandia TSOd encoder installed Tipup canopy completed but not final-installed. Needs rear window installed, 1 panel each wing installed, top fuse panel behind window and fwd of canopy installed (left out for wiring access). No fiberglass work done. Includes Advanced Flight Systems AoA, wig-wag HID lights, bulletproof electrical system based on Bob Nuckolls' designs and Perihelion products, low fuel warning, low coolant warning, fuel pressure warning, electric flaps, electric trim, custom console, heater, Oregon Aero seats, Hooker harness, Show Planes Flaps Positioning System, Infinity Aerospace grips, cabin lighting, custom baggage compartment and other customizations (see my custom page <http://www.meyette.us/custom.htm> http://www.meyette.us/custom.htm ). Includes finishing kit and all parts to finish it. All gear mounted and brakes installed. Van's front gear leg SB installed. Panel complete, except Garmin wiring. Empennage is done & final-installed. Flaps & ailerons all done & fitted. Wings not installed. And much more - this is a list off the top of my head of some of the main components. Entire project very extensively documented at <http://www.meyette.us/RV-7Ahome.htm> http://www.meyette.us/RV-7Ahome.htm No effort or expense spared in doing everything RIGHT. Everyone who's looked at it, including 3 EAA Tech Inspector visits, says all the workmanship is excellent Every part needed to finish and fly the plane is included; nothing left to buy. Only asking $45k for it - way less than cost and making the FWF essentially FREE. Will also trade it for an RV-12 kit, in case someone has decided they'd like a faster plane. Will sell it without the FWF for $39K; hardly more than the cost of the kits alone. Less than the cost of parts, not even counting the BMA EFIS or the FWF. I found two of them with a simple Google search. I'm not sure if either meets your requirements but here are the links to them: >From a Quickie http://www.quickheads.com/warnke-ground-adjustable-prop.html Another one http://www.wingsfortheword.com/custom/index.cfm?ID=190027 Good luck, Jack -----Original Message----- From: owner-rv-list-server(at)matronics.com [mailto:owner-rv-list-server(at)matronics.com] On Behalf Of Paul Bowmar Sent: Wednesday, August 11, 2010 10:44 AM Subject: RV-List: Warnke Prop Does anybody out there have a Warnke wood prop they would consider selling? Ben, It's my understanding that the oil is drawn from the sump, pumped to the cooler, circulated through the engine, and then drains back to the sump. If so, then I want to know the temp coming from the cooler, since that is what the engine sees. Unless I'm missing something here. Ernie Amadio
