The workshop was extremely valuable. Mahlon, John, and Keith
were great hosts and answered a bunch of questions we had. The assembly
started around 9 and we were done by 3:30. Then we did a tour of a
vintage car collection that was just breathtaking. Several cars there
were "the only one remaining in the world." We even got to talk to
Parker -- an 84-year-old owner of the collection. He loves this stuff
and loves talking about it.
On the way back we just reversed the route and stopped at MIV
again. This time, JFK was even busier and we got to see a British
Airways B-747 passing a few miles off our left wing at same altitude.
And of course, as the Friday front passed, we got treated to more
headwind on the way back. We did expect it though. Luckily it was a
lot warmer on Sunday. Putting in a music input into the intercom was a
great idea.
I put a few photos on my site:

Anyone happen to have an engine stand that I could borrow (or rent?)? Figured
I'd check before buying one.

YES! I have one I'm not going to use. I already need to talk with you about
the timing of a visit ... and maybe we can also have me bring my stand down
when I wander down to Charlotte. We can take the rest of the planning off
list (so we don't bug the nice people) if you want the stand.

Subject: | Garmin 496 vs 396... |
On this note, not having used either (I have a 196) what impact do
you think the higher refresh, etc. of the 496 vs the 396 would have
on it's utility as an emergency IFR backup.
My own experience with the instruments simulation screen on the 196
leads me to think that a faster response would greatly improve the
device's utility for such an emergency.
Of course my extremely limited actual instrument time (not being IFR
qualified that's a good thing) makes me want to avoid jumping to my
own conclusions.
Any thoughts on that? I realize it's a little early to be planning my
panel!

Four retired guys, two from California and two from Arizona , are walking
down a street in Chicago . Then they turn a corner and see a sign that says,
"Old Timer's Bar" "ALL DRINKS 10 CENTS!"
They look at each other, and then go in.
The old bartender says in a voice that carries across the room, "Come on in
and let me pour one for you. What'll it be Gentlemen?"
There seems to be a fully stocked bar, so the 4 men each asked for a
martini. In short order, the bartender serves up 4 iced martinis and says,
"That'll be 10 cents each, please." They can't believe their good luck.
They pay the 40 cents, finish their martinis, and order another round.
Again, four excellent martinis are produced with the bartender again saying,
"That's 40 cents, please."
They pay the 40 cents, but their curiosity is more than they can stand.
They've each had two martinis and so far they've spent less than a dollar.
Finally one of the men couldn't stand it any longer and asks the bartender,
"How can you afford to serve martinis as good as these for a dime a piece?"
"Here's my story. I'm a retired tailor from Brooklyn , and I always wanted
to own a bar. Last year I hit the lottery for $25 million and decided to
open this place. Every drink costs a dime - wine, liquor, beer, all the
same."
"Wow!! That's quite a story," says one of the men.
The four of them sipped at their martinis and couldn't help but notice three
other guys at the end of the bar who didn't have a drink in front of them,
and hadn't ordered anything the whole time they were there.
One man gestures at the three at the end of the bar without drinks and asks
the bartender, "What's with them?"
The bartender says, "They're retired airline pilots. They're waiting for
happy hour."

November Bellanca Crash Had Unlicensed Pilot At Controls
Plane's Last FAA Inspection Was Over Two Decades Ago
The NTSB says a man who crash landed his Bellanca BL-17-30 Super Viking
(file photo below) in Lantana, FL last month wasn't licensed -- and the
plane was 22 years out of inspection.
Allan Schultz, 71, suffered only a broken nose and other slight injuries
when his plane's engine failed on approach to Palm Beach County Park Airport
on November 13. The plane went down in a residential neighborhood taking out
power lines, hitting the roof of a house and damaging a parked car.
The aircraft was substantially damaged.
A report on the NTSB's website says the Schultz -- not an Airframe and
Powerplant mechanic -- performed all the maintenance on the aircraft. The
plane's last inspection according to its logs was in January of 1984.
A post-crash inspection revealed no anomalies with the airplane's fuel,
electrical and induction systems. The only fuel the inspector found in the
aircraft or around the crash site was about six to eight ounces of auto fuel
in the plane's right tank. The aircraft had no STC for the use of auto fuel.
The NTSB report says Schultz's license was suspended in November of 1996 for
unspecified reasons. There was no information on his pilot experience. The
report also says his latest medical exam was in June of 1996, but not
whether he was medically cleared to fly.
According to local reports, it doesn't appear local law enforcement will
pursue criminal charges against Schultz. Sheriff's spokeswoman Teri Barbera
told the Palm Beach Post, "We handle it on a rescue level. Once they
(federal investigators) come on scene, they take jurisdiction."
It's unclear at this point what action, if any, the FAA will take.
FAA spokeswoman Kathleen Bergen told the Post, "There is no criminal
investigation whatsoever. We do not enforce criminal (violations). We do
violations of air safety regulations: letters of warning up to fines to
suspensions of a pilot certificate."

The only thing that might have made this worse is if someone without flying
experience was at the controls and someone on the ground was injured.
This guy was an idiot.

So, not to worry if you lose the ol' medical or drop your insurance;
just keep flyin' and hope nobody notices :-)
Might work for me when I hit 90 years old.

Gentlemen,
If I could chime in here for a second... I'm a good way from being ready to
buy my GPS, but I was half way planning on the 396 until the 496 came out. The
496 has three features the 396 doesn't.
For the traveler...
(1) It has AOPA's 5300 entry airport directory installed which includes names
and phone numbers of FBO's, restaurants, and hotels.
(2) It has what Garmin calls the "Safe Taxi" feature where you are able to see
your postion on an airport diagram to help prevent runway incursions and,
(3) It has the "Smart Airspace" feature that alerts you to potential airspace
issues based on your altitude.

My chime is to get the Lowrance 2000c it has all these features but weather.
Might I mention the largest screen and it below $900.00 unless you have
settled on the Garmin.

Personally I feel strongly about having redundancy for all critical systems
in IFR. I use 2 separate EFIS units in my -8A just for this reason. The xx6
Garmins have a nice panel page but (in my opinion) not really capable of
serving as a panel (even partial) in IMC.
My two cents.

On this note, not having used either (I have a 196) what impact do you think
the higher refresh, etc. of the 496 vs the 396 would have on it's utility as
an emergency IFR backup.
My own experience with the instruments simulation screen on the 196 leads me
to think that a faster response would greatly improve the device's utility
for such an emergency.
Of course my extremely limited actual instrument time (not being IFR
qualified that's a good thing) makes me want to avoid jumping to my own
conclusions.
Any thoughts on that? I realize it's a little early to be planning my panel!

Thanks for the advice. I tend to agree, to the extent that I don't
have any experience and therefor have an uninformed opinion.
I was thinking of the panel as more of a "worst case scenario" total
systems failure option.

Subject: | Re: Garmin 496 vs 396 |
I've been flying with a 396 for a couple of years in my IFR equipped
Maule. My panel and it's backup was designed pre-396.
As an ultimate, last resort backup the 396 (and 496) is a leap ahead for
me. Independent navigation, gyro function, power and light makes it
quite capable. A quantum leap from where I was. I wouldn't design an
IFR panel around it (except as a weather device at which it excels), but
would no longer fly in IMC without it onboard given my somewhat dated panel.
I haven't touched a 496 but would recommend the 396 as a price
performer. The 'gyro panel' is good enough to fly blind on (I've done
it in practice), the weather is the same, the music is the same. Taxi
diagrams would be nice on the 496. I do spend some time making sure I
have the local road maps whenever I travel because the memory on the 396
does not allow you to load the entire countries roads, restaurants,
stores, etc into the system (oh no!). I can load something like Pgh,
Atlanta, NC, and most of FL. If I wanted to add say Wash DC, I might
have to offload something. The 496 can load the entire US I
understand. That's all a road map statement and has nothing to do with
aviation function. I understand the 496 has the AOPA airport Directory
loaded too. That would be nice but I have the same thing on my phone.
My panel is build around a Garmin 300XL whose refresh rate is from
another century. The 396 is blindingly fast to me. I'm sure the 496 is
even much better. You can't be too fast or have too much memory.

Guys: For the mildly adventurous, there are alternatives to commercially
available systems like the Garmin panel mounts and the 496 that have equal
or better performance and features for far less money.
I will try to take a couple of shots of the home brew nav system I cooked
up for my Rocket for anyone who might be interested. I will have an SL-30
and a Garmin 300XL in the panel for IFR "legality" purposes, but I expect
to actually navigate most of the time on my "custom" system. It is
comprised of a stand-alone GPS ($27), a mini-computer with a ruggedized
20gig hard drive and an 8" touchscreen LCD driven by AnywhereMap's
excellent software. It has the side benefit of being able to alternatively
display two other video inputs as well. I will have a bullet camera in one
wingtip.
I did this because I really like the AnywhereMap software which supports an
amazing array of features (Wx, terrain, approach plates, etc) and I wanted
a large display. On the bench, the system is very fast and stable. I can
see no reason that it won't work equally well in the air. The display is
quite bright and its brightness level is adjustable. If the brightness is
inadequate, there are other displays I can go to that are a bit more
expensive than the one I have now that are alleged to be very bright, so I
am not concerned---we'll see when it flies. The mini-computer, which is a
full functioning PC with an internal fan, is quite small at 7" x 7" x
2.5". I have plenty of room for it under the floor forward of the pilot's
stick. The whole system is 12v, so there are no converters involved.
If anyone is interested, contact me at leeloganster(at)gmail.com. I'll be
happy to send you a picture of it in operation.

So the houseboat is "out," huh?
Sounds like a long trip on a tight timetable, the kind of thing an IFR
pilot could consider doing, but maybe not moi.
I just lost my Nurse Practitioner quite suddenly today (left my employ
for a teaching job at the local community college nursing school), so
my ability to take trips and time off on the fly just dropped to
near-zero for the time being. Until I can make other arrangements,
this is really going to crimp my style. Oh, well, at least I have a
cool SERV hat to wear, even if I'm not going anywhere much these days.
And soon I'll have an autographed Van's calendar to write down
y'all's trip dates on.

You are right ... the market times have been changed from April to March ...
I will probably have some trouble with that unless we go early March.

I think this January Lakeland trip is separate from the houseboat idea. We
need to start thinking about it too. Maybe Feb or March????

TWAS THE NIGHT BEFORE CHRISTMAS -- AVIATION STYLE
Twas the night before Christmas, and out on the ramp,
Not an airplane was stirring, not even a Champ.
The aircraft were fastened to tiedowns with care,
In hopes that come morning, they all would be there.
The fuel trucks were nestled, all snug in their spots,
With gusts from two-forty at 39 knots.
I slumped at the fuel desk, now finally caught up,
And settled down comfortably, resting my butt.
When the radio lit up with noise and with chatter,
I turned up the scanner to see what was the matter.
A voice clearly heard over static and snow,
Called for clearance to land at the airport below.
He barked his transmission so lively and quick,
I'd have sworn that the call sign he used was "St. Nick".
I ran to the panel to turn up the lights,
The better to welcome this magical flight.
He called his position, no room for denial,
"St. Nicholas One, turnin' left onto final."
And what to my wondering eyes should appear,
But a Rutan-built sleigh, with eight Rotax Reindeer!
With vectors to final, down the glideslope he came,
As he passed all fixes, he called them by name:
"Now Ringo! Now Tolga! Now Trini and Bacun!
On Comet! On Cupid!" What pills was he takin'?
While controllers were sittin', and scratchin' their head,
They phoned to my office, and I heard it with dread,
The message they left was both urgent and dour:
"When Santa pulls in, have him please call the tower."
He landed like silk, with the sled runners sparking,
Then I heard "Left at Charlie," and "Taxi to parking."
He slowed to a taxi, turned off of three-oh
And stopped on the ramp with a "Ho, ho-ho-ho..."
He stepped out of the sleigh, but before he could talk,
I ran out to meet him with my best set of chocks.
His red helmet and goggles were covered with frost
And his beard was all blackened from Reindeer exhaust.
His breath smelled like peppermint, gone slightly stale,
And he puffed on a pipe, but he didn't inhale.
His cheeks were all rosy and jiggled like jelly,
His boots were as black as a cropduster's belly.
He was chubby and plump, in his suit of bright red,
And he asked me to "fill it, with hundred low-lead."
He came dashing in from the snow-covered pump,
I knew he was anxious for drainin' the sump.
I spoke not a word, but went straight to my work,
And I filled up the sleigh, but I spilled like a jerk.
He came out of the restroom, and sighed in relief,
Then he picked up a phone for a Flight Service brief.
And I thought as he silently scribed in his log,
These reindeer could land in an eighth-mile fog.
He completed his pre-flight, from the front to the rear,
Then he put on his headset, and I heard him yell, "Clear!"
And laying a finger on his push-to-talk,
He called up the tower for clearance and squawk.
"Take taxiway Charlie, the southbound direction,
Turn right three-two-zero at pilot's discretion"
He sped down the runway, the best of the best,
"Your traffic's a Grumman, inbound from the west."
Then I heard him proclaim, as he climbed through the night,
"Merry Christmas to all! I have traffic in sight."

Sunday, but I doubt it. Since wx. looks Lennish for
Sat, we may be SOL unless someone knows who's open
Sunday somwhere in the 2 state area. Will update if I

Bill,
I just got off the phone with the Carabba's in NMB. They are
definitely going to be open on Sunday 12/31 at 11:00 AM.
Not sure if that would interest everybody or not, but they are
definitely an option.

OK guys, since wx. looks Lennish for Sat., we can do
noon Sunday and go to Carrabas if you care. Need a

say if you are IN and how many. Could turn into a

This would be 3rd Annual gathering, not bad for
