I also just read this searching through the Yahoo Jab group:

"...at the switch end,
you should connect both L and R shield grounds together (but not to
anything else but the switch), for redundancy, in case of a break in
one of the ground leads, you can still shut off the engine. This
should not cause a ground loop/noise problem..."
