Bob!
I'm building a RV-7 which will have Powersport Aviation's Rotary Power
Aircraft Engine as its powerplant. I'm into the wiring of the aircraft using
your Z-11a design (two batteries 18 amp each and one 60 amp alternator) and
using your LVMM and OVM. The engine is a two rotor design with two separate
ECU's(one per rotor) and two electric fuel pumps(one on at all times). Which
battery bus would you recommend powering the ECU's and fuel pumps from?
Appreciate any comments you might offer.
regards
Tom Parks

Agreed. Just to add a little, my system (probably any system that drives an
inductive ignition) creates very sharp current transients on the supply line
when it shuts off a coil. These current transients can conceivably create
voltage transients that propagate throughout the electrical system. I have
found no problems with any other automotive system and also haven't seen a
problem in an aircraft environment. A much larger conducted noise source is
probably the alternator. The large diodes don't conduct immediately when
forward biased and create very narrow, but high amplitude voltage
transients. In applying our pressure sensors to automotive applications
this seems to be the most severe source of conducted noise. This tends to
show up every time the customer bolts on a higher-current alternator, with
diesel trucks seeming to be the biggest offenders. The offending frequency
spectrum seems to be between 100 and 150 mHz. And this is all CONDUCTED
noise, not RADIATED.

Subject: | aux fuel transfer done light. |

I have a center aux tank that transfers into the left wing with a cessna
diaphragm fuel pump. ( http://ppavionics.com/FuelPump.htm would have been
better with its built in check valve ) It would be nice to have a light
come on when its DONE transferring all the fuel.. The pump draws .65 to
.70 amps dry and .88 to .92 amps while pumping fuel through my system at
13.8V ( in-flight it will see 14.2V )
Tried to design a comparator circuit watching a shunt and my reference
voltage to turn on a light, but the pump pulses cause too much noise for
it to work. ( http://ppavionics.com/XFR.htm counts the pulses and stops
the pump when the freq changes )
The next thought was to use a H-bridge SCR motor controller that has
built in current sensor.. (used for gripers in stepper motors) but
that was getting too complicated.
or mount a small amp meter like:
http://www.allelectronics.com/cgi-bin/category.cgi?category=385&item=PMD-1A
http://www.bach-simpson.com/wilbac02.htm
http://www.surplussales.com/Meters/MtrDCAmps.html
and glance down at it to see if the needle dropped, but I'd prefer to
have a light... how do I invert the amp drop to drive a light?

Subject: | Wire Sizing Questions |
--> AeroElectric-List message posted by: "Shannon Knoepflein" <kycshann@kyol.net>
Ok, time to order some wire. If anyone recalls, I'm building a Lancair
Legacy with a Z14 system. My load analysis spreadsheet is published at
http://shannon.v8eaters.com/images/lancair/
Now my question is for wire sizing for the main buss feeds from the
batteries to the instrument panel. My batteries, dual 17ah, are behind
the seat. From my spreadsheet, I show a total MAX possible load of
73.4A on the Main Buss, and a total MAX possible load on the Aux Buss as
26.2A. These are MAX ratings, ie, if everything was on at the same
time, all sucking max power.....basically, never gonna happen. Now, I
have the loads configured for the different segments of flight, and I
show the continuous ratings on each buss to be 45.4A and 19.7A
respectively.
Main Buss 45.4A
Aux/Ess Buss 19.7A
Also, my alternators are 70A and 35A respectively, just for info.
So, I have batteries behind the seat, battery contactors at the
batteries, and my starter and crossfeed contactors on the firewall, so I
need main power wires to run from battery to firewall, about 10' in
length.
The amperage leads me to 4 gauge, which is good for 72A. So, that works
out to 10' of it having a 0.113 voltage drop on the Main, and 0.049 on
the Aux/Ess, at normal loads. Sound good?
My only concern is when or if I was ever at MAX possible load, but I
don't even think this is an issue, being it is only at 73.4A?
Can I run a single common ground of 2 gauge for both busses?
Last question....when running the 10 gauge for my Ess Buss Alternate
Feed, I'm figuring a 0.22 volt drop on it just due to the wire, not
including the drop across the diode (one of Eric's Super Diodes). This
could be up around 1.0 volt total drop. Is this too much?

I am not convinced that even when spelled correctly, that sending the server
an "unsubscribe" message will stop the flow of emails. I looked through
the web
links at the bottom and wasn't able to find reference to this procedure. It
works on some servers, but I couldn't see where it would on this one.
Someone

Subject: | Aux and Main Battery Bus for RV-7 |
--> AeroElectric-List message posted by: "Tom Parks" <flightwork2@msn.com>
Bob
I'm building a RV-7 powered by Powersport Aviation's Rotary Aviation and I am starting
to wire the electrical system. I'm using the z-11a layout with LVMM and
OVM crowbar and (all electric configuration) with two SLA 18 amp batteries and
a 60 amp internally regulated alternator furnished with the FWF engine package.
The engine is a two rotor design utilizing FADEC engine control having two
ECU's (one for each rotor) and two electric Bosch fuel pumps connected in parallel.
First of many questions to follow: Which bus would you suggest wiring
the ECU's and fuel pumps too; Aux or Main battery bus or both and why? I'm using
a Aeroconnection's DPDT relay for each pump (draw/fused at 5 amps each); ECU's
draw/fused at 5 amps each, Ignition coil draw/fused at 5 amps and Fuel injector
supply draw/fused at 7.5 amps. Appreciate any advice/discussion you can
provide and planning on attending your Ft. Worth seminar in March.

Almost-a-doctor Dee had surgery this morning to remove a kidney
with a cancerous tumor growing on it. Doctors were happy with
the outcome and called it a 99% chance of a cure . . . no
further treatment necessary. However, she's a very unhappy
camper right now.
Given that about 2x more folks croak in hospitals due to
medical accident than accidents on our hazardous highways, the
family is providing 100% assistance/monitoring for the
next few days. I'm just waiting for my Stanley full of
coffee to finish perking and I'll be off to relieve my
sister-in-law for the 11pm to 8am shift.
Not sure how coherent I'm going to be with electrical matters
in the near term but this too will pass . . .

Good call...glad I asked. So, a single #2 AWG for ground, and a #2 for
Main, and a #4 for Aux/ESS. Sound good to everyone for a 10' run?

I am running duel MSD 6AL ignition boxes. Box 1 is getting power from the
main buss. Box 2 gets its feed straight from the Positive post of the
battery with a fuse inline. I was concerned that if for some reason the
master relay died and both boxes were fed by that circuit I would be looking
for a place to land. This way the whole electrical system can die and I will
make it down safely. Ben. N801BH.

I'm still debating the best way of arranging my lighting. Has anyone tried the
combination postion/strobe/tail lights, (Whelen A600PG/PR)? This seems the simplest
way to provide the lighting but I'm not quite convinced as to the ease
of mounting these to an RV wing tip to give the necessary coverage and also wonder
about the vulnerability issues.
Your thoughts please gentlemen.
