Just like the "lime light" night lights (El using 120 vac) they start out good then deteriorate with age (70% less after 3,000 hrs) & are damaged by sunlight. This time deterioration may be insignificant because it appears to be operating time. But--- I suggest for home-built aircraft, its very hard to beat LEDs. Chief advantage is no inverter. Inverters are always noisy and it's one more thing to fail. LEDs are dimmable just like incandescent lamps. They last virtually forever (100,000 and more). Perhaps I'm too old for this, but Heading seems to me to be the direction of the aircraft's nose. As you say, GPS cannot detect this. Therefore , GPS provides Track Made Good or Ground Track and its changes only. Agreed. I just got my goose neck dimmer back from Bob with the revised resistors he recommended in an earlier post. Now the LED's, two for my sight gauges and two on the panel, have a full range of brightness. The map light, dome light and avionics lights also dim nicely. Excellent! Bob. I know you're busy with more important stuff right now, but many thanks for you're efforts fixing and modifying my unit. There will be differences between heading and track. Except for a slow airplane in high winds, can you describe a scenario where the ground track and heading will differ enough to cause you loss of control problems? The worst scenario I can think of is where you are trying to return to wings level after loss of control, and end up on a heading that is nearly perpendicular to the wind. Even in this scenario, I think the GPS will allow you to stabilize your heading (reduce the rate of change) effectively. The GPS should be able to make a pretty good guess at what your bank angle is, with the assumption that you aren't significantly losing altitude, and that you have the ball centered. This is so because turn rate, airspeed (both closely connected to track over the ground), and bank angle are very closely related, regardless of aircraft type. If you have entered a spiral, I believe that the GPS will overestimate your bank angle, and that's probably okay. The overestimation will come from the fact that your ground track is describing a sharper turn than the same bank angle would for level flight. Like Old Bob said, if you can stop the turn, you can survive. So, based on the above arguments, with vigilance, you should be able to keep the wings level with the GPS. If you need to maneuver in order to make an approach or let down, as long as you manage your turn rate to something which equates to less than 30deg of bank, you should be in good shape. Things may seem a bit squirrely if you try to fly a slow plane on a windy day, but not unmanageable. I used to be able to fly a pretty good needle-ball-airspeed GCA in a T-37 on the Turn Needle. When I try to fly similar things in my Cozy with Turn Coordinator, the turn coordinator seems much more sensitive and jumpy, and there is also the illusion that since the little airplane doesn't climb or descend, you're flying level pitch. I prefer the turn needle. --Kent Hebeard2@aol.com wrote: > Just one very real world testimonial for the T&B when seconds counted. > Needless to say I prefer the T&B. ________________________________ Message 11 ____________________________________ Time: 09:25:53 AM PST US From: N2165v@aol.com Subject: AeroElectric-List: encoder compatibility --> AeroElectric-List message posted by: N2165v@aol.com New to the list. Of course you're correct, but since your aircraft IS moving, and GPS can detect changes in track in as little as a few feet (tiny fractions of a second) it might as well be detecting heading. Except for wind correction crab. And if your aircraft isn't moving, you either don't need heading information because you're parked, or you have bigger problems because you're caught in an alien tractor beam. ________________________________ Message 13 ____________________________________ Time: 10:00:18 AM PST US From: HCRV6@aol.com Subject: Re: AeroElectric-List: Wiring Question --> AeroElectric-List message posted by: HCRV6@aol.com In a message dated 1/23/03 10:36:12 AM Pacific Standard Time, F1Rocket@comcast.net writes: << -> AeroElectric-List message posted by: Randy Pflanzer Snip<< Why doesn't the power feed wire to the main bus have any protection? I bought several feet of some fiberglass sleeving from B & C Aeroelectric like they supply with their stock 22 AWG fuse link kits and used that to make up my own size links four AWG sizes smaller that the main feeder per Bob's instructions. We've had a lot of messages both on and off the list . . . unfortunately too many to acknowledge individually right now. Just wanted everyone to know that your friendship is a much valued feature in our lives. Dee is over the hump. She's getting out of bed largely unassisted and has been able to shed about half the auxiliary plumbing (it takes a checklist to run the mission from bed to bathroom to make sure everything gets put back in the right places!). Her tummy isn't ready to go back to work as the major source of nutrition processing so her stay may run out a day longer than originally anticipated but in any case, she is feeling MUCH better. I'm just about completely adjusted to being a "third shift" person . . . just about the time I get that smoothed out I get to shift back! I've been watching some of the threads and gratified at the willingness of folks to work down to the simple ideas that underlie EVERY solution. Be back on line this weekend. Again, thank you all . . .
