I built an adjustable voltage regulator based on an LM317T from Radio Shack,
see:
http://www.radioshack.com/product.asp?catalog%5Fname=CTLG&product%5Fid=276-1778
instructions are included in the package.
For the LEDs, there are lots of choices. Radioshack has a bunch, Aircraft
Spruce has these bright arrays,
http://www.aircraftspruce.com/catalog/elpages/ledutility.php
And www.Digikey.com and www.mouser.com are good sources.
Also, I ran across some bright LED flashlights at Lowes/Home Depot that you
could cannibalize.

Ira,
We fitted a B&C alternator on the rear of the Rotax similar to Jim Nelson's
installation. Using the B&C LRC regulator voltages are adjustable. With
this setup, our main alternator supplies 40A at 5000 RPM. Rotax alternator
is now our standby. Contact me off list if you want more details. The
install was straight-forward and the space used was vacant.

The 2AWG wire from battery contactor to the battery (+) terminal
should be as short as practical. Is the that black structure
above the battery contactor the battery box? If so, what you show
is fine. If your battery is back in the tail, then the battery
contactor should be in the tail with the battery.

P.S. You call out a 2AWG wire to the battery from the battery
contactor. If the run is LONG . . . back to the tail. Then
2AWG is appropriate -AND- you should move the contactor back
to the tail with the battery. If the battery is close by,
then this wire and ALL fat wires under the cowl can be 4AWG.

I bought some RG-400 cable for my VHF Comm with connectors already on. But the
wire length is turning out to be about twice what's actually needed.
Is there a RG-400 specific crimp on BNC connector type I should specifically ask
for? ie, is this going to be a Radio Shack item or should I turn to mail order
for this one?
TIA,
Lucky

Don't forget that the Van's Alternators are the ones that folks have
reported having problems (i.e. fried regulator) if you disconnect the B lead
while it is under load. The Van's website even has a warning about this. I
personally think you are doing the right thing adding OV protection - just
be careful!
I believe the recommended procedure is to switch off the alternator only
after the engine stops.

Listers,
Just a quick note to say that I've caught the great Cashette.Com debacle of
2004 and have tried to clean out all of the pending List email queues of
all the "you are not yet on my Approved List" messages. There were about
117 of them queued when I noticed what was going on.
In a nutshell, this guy signed up for all of the Lists and had a "register
with my site" spam filter enabled on his account. When his account started
receiving List messages, it started sending back, "you need to register"
messages back to the various Lists which in turn went to the Lists which in
turn got sent to the same spam filter which in turn sent back a message
indicating that the List needed to register, and so on and so on until, I
suppose, the Internet just blew up! Sheeze, some of these spam systems are
so brain dead!
Anyway, I've cleaned out all of the messages generated by this thing and
put in a permanent block from this cashette.com website so that this
shouldn't be a problem any longer.

I think the problem is some people were turning the battery off with out
turning the alternator first. I am using a switch that goes from off to
battery to alternator. There is no way to turn the battery off first
this way.

Subject: | hall effect current sensor ammeter |
--> AeroElectric-List message posted by: "thomas a. sargent" <sarg314@comcast.net>
I have been looking for an ammeter that uses a Hall effect sensor
(instead of a shunt) to use to show battery charge/discharge current.
There don't seem to be any in the aircraft instrument catalogs. I did
some web searching and found these nifty sensors that run on 12-15v and
output 1 ma for each amp sensed. It looks like you could use this
instead of a shunt with just the approriate choice of sense resistor and
connect it to an ordinary battery meter from ACS or a generic LCD panel
meter. Any reason this wouldn't work?
http://www.fwbell.com/stm/content.asp?page_id=673
Before the flames start, I realize that shunts are cheap and pretty fool
proof (these sensors cost about $36 from Newark Electronics). However,
shunts do add a bit of resistance and a couple more connections, which
is bad to put in a 200 amp circuit, which your battery is in. The Hall
effect sensor does not connect electrically to the battery cable. The
cable just goes thru it. Hall effect also rates high on the
slick-o-meter. I note that my VM1000 uses a hall effect sensor on the
alternator B lead, so Vision Micro thought a Hall effect sensor was a
good idea.
I've emailed F.W. Bell to ask what happens if you over load the 50amp
sensor with 200 amps. I suspect that, since this is a nulling device, it
just rails its output current at 50ma and sits there.

These are great, but note that they require + and - 12 to15V, not just
+12 to 15V. It is possible that they would still work with only the +
supply and measure only + currents, but you would have to contact the
manufacturer to confirm that. Their abbreviated schematic does not have
sufficient detail to know for sure one way or the other.
