At 12:14 AM 9/17/2011, you wrote: >YOUR LINK COMPLETELY, MELTED DOWN MY MACHINE!!! 29 HOURS OF WORK >WITH NO RESOLUTION.............(((( Hadley, That wasn't "his link". I cannot explain the details of how this event came to be . . . I know that Matt has some pretty effective firewalls against spoofed e-mail addresses. Firewalls that gave me considerable difficult in sending righteous e-mails to other systems that had their own firewalls. I had one firewall jousting with another firewall . . . both put in place to protect all honorable users. The work-around at my end was to get a fixed i.p. address assigned to my portal to the web. Don't know how all that works but it did ultimately fix my problem. So just how this particular piece of trash made it into our community is not known to me. I'm sorry that it generated so much grief for you. I tested the link from a sacrificial computer and AVG screening tools flagged it as malicious and successfully blocked the mission. Have you applied any effective tools for cleaning a computer of malicious software? With that degree of intractability for clearing out a malicious invasion, perhaps you're best advised to regenerate your machine to as-new condition. Alternatively, most computer stores of any note offer clean-up/recovery services using specialized tools. That being said, let us all take note of Hadley's experience with respect to embedded links. The purpose for adding any link to a message should be to support an existing thread or to bring some piece of aviation oriented information to the attention of the List. Links I post that are not on my server at aeroelectric.com are tested the downloaded content screened for malicious features. Be suspicious of any posted link that does not have an explanation of what it's about from ANY member of the List . . . I know that I've posted bare- footed links in the past . . . I'll discontinue that practice. Any link I publish will be accompanied by an explanation of content and, of course, be previewed here before offered to the List. I would ask that everyone else offer a similar courtesy when referring List members to external links. Finally, avail yourselves of anti-spyware, anti-viral screening tools. I use several that have, on occasion, blocked a site from having access to my computer. It's not expensive, some are free, and while perhaps not 100% effective, they are better than nothing. I'd settle for 95% rather than run around the 'net barefooted. I hope Hadley is able to recover his computer with a minimal loss of work product. Let his experience be a reminder to us all that there are risks in life that can probably never be driven to zero. I wish now that I had voiced my suspicions of the link when it first appeared. As it was, I simply trashed the message. Let's watch each other's backs . . . Bob . . .

A reader asked if there was enough 'meat' in the connector base to cut an indexing relief for the lockwasher . . . as opposed to using glue to fixture the washer. The answer is 'yes'. See Plan-B version below. Thanks Bill! --------------------------------------------------- On several occasions I've cited a commonly marketed insulated feed-thru mounting for CB antennas as suitable for doing your own comm antenna. I've seen this part in blister packs in lots of stores for prices ranging from 8 to 12 dollars. Here's an offering I spotted on Ebay http://tinyurl.com/3bq5uhv Emacs! The price is right. You can put a UHF connector on your feed line and it will connect directly to this mounting. Alternatively, a UHF-M/BNC-F adapter will let you use the user friendly BNC-CM connector on your coax. The other end of the adapter is 3/8-24 thread hole. Silver solder your stainless antenna whisker into a hole drilled in a stainless 3/8-24 hex bolt. You can purchase a 3' chunk of 'piano wire' at many hardware stores. 3/16" diameter is a good size. Bugger the bolt threads pretty good (poor boy's lock screw). A chisel works good, just leave first three threads untouched so you can get it to start. Coat the threads with grease and screw it into the adapter. The internal tooth lock washer goes inside between the doubler and the connector. The skin+doubler thickness should be .09" or better and braced against stringers and/or bulkheads if possible. Make your antenna 22 inches long (total length of base+whisker). An improved methodology for keeping the lockwasher centered on the connector is to cut away .015 to .020" of material off the face of the hex down to a diameter of .500" as shown here. You can grip the part in a 3-jaw chuck directly onto the threads. Don't mash 'em and take very light cuts. A couple of .005" passes produced this end result with no damage to threads. Emacs! This modification of the base will keep the lockwasher centered while you bolt everything up. After all is said and done, here's what your ready-to-install antenna looks like. Emacs! Here's the order of installation on your airplane. Emacs! Bob . . .

It's happening all over Yahoo, too. Many groups are affected. We should find the perps and um, beat the tar out of them. Then put them in jail. I can suggest the usual: 1. make *backups* of your system(s). 2. for Windows environments, AVG antivirus software is good, as well as IOBit's antivirus and system optimizing software. Both are free. 3. for Linux, there are several antivirus programs out there, most of them are free, too. HTH, David M. Robert L. A friend of mine has been tracking the Reno accident. There's a picture circulating that shows what appears to be a detached elevator trim tap on the accident aircraft . . . That's never a good thing . . . and can be really bad at 400 kts. Emacs! Bob . . .
