This is exactly the sort of event that can
be recovered. There's a process described in the
Concorde maintenance documents for doing one or
more recharge/discharge cycles on a badly abused
battery. If (as the instance you describe) the
recovery is started soon, a lot if not all of the
battery's before-incident condition can be
restored.
Thanks for the input!

Any experience with "Battery Marvel" ? Battery Marvel is a device
"designed to constantly monitor the health of common 12v lead-acid batteries...."
The write-up in "Nuts and Volts" magazine November 2011 pp 34-39 is
encouraging, but I'd like the opinions of others. The author indicates "During
the first few seconds at power-up the Battery Marvel transmits the
historical data...." Next month they propose to show the reader how to build
an
optical data reader that can capture historical details (e.g., voltage drop
after energizing starter motor and other details) and enable it to be
viewed on a PC.
I've been a close viewer of the discussions on battery health and a few
months ago bought the West Mountain Radio CBA-III Computerized Battery
Analyzer after Bob's favorable comment. Some links to the Battery Marvel device
$29 fully assembled, $19 kit (a lot cheaper than the CBA-III):

I have no knowledge of the individuals associated with Battery Marvel and
no financial interest.

Subject: | Virus Corrupting my system |
List Members,
My sincere apologies to all. It appears as though my computer was attacked
by a virus within the last hour.
My son, the computer whiz, has told me how to get it resolved immediately,
which I will.
Sorry if this causes anyone else an inconvenience, too.

Approach with caution. I'm not suggesting that
the device doesn't offer 'useful' information of
some sort . . . the question is WHAT information?
Given that it's a 2-wire connection the ONLY parameter
it can monitor is voltage. Hence, for it to provide useful
information, it must be able to INTERPRET dynamic voltage
values and make some judgement as to potential failures
based on shape, amplitude and timing of voltage wiggles.
It's not unlike knowing how the legacy minus-0-plus battery
ammeter behaved in cars and many Cessnas.
Devices with nothing but light bulbs must be endowed
with similar intelligence and deductive skills
that a skilled and observant pilot might exercise while
watching a voltmeter.
Did the nuts-n-volts article explain principals of
operation? Better yet, was there source code for
a DIY project?
The magazines have been full of ads for sundry electro-
whizzies and gizmos that promised great returns on
investment for everything from recovering trashed batteries
to huge boosts in gas mileage. Unless they are fully
disclosed and open to repeatable validation of an experiment,
let the buyer beware.
The CBA-III offers plotted numbers. This little feller
flashes lights. I understand and can use the numbers.
don't know about the lights.
