He needs to change the GPS antenna and possibly its cable if it doesn't match the new spec. I looked through the manuals to see what differences there might be in the pinouts. There are few and of little consequence. None are connected in the certified installation in my Cessna 172. I offer the list here in case anyone is interested. With the new capability came a pair of new antennas, new antenna cables and the admonition NOT to cut the cable length. The whole system was very finely tuned and to ensure the accuracy in positioning required for instrument work the new hardware must be used as provided. My Garmin units were in the instrument panel and the antenna installed on top of the panel so I had to carefully roll up the 15' of RG-400 cable for each unit so it would fit inside the instrument panel. So, yes, he has to change the antenna and cable and ensure it all meets Garmin specs if he is to do it "by the book." Bob Borger Europa XS Tri, Rotax 914, Airmaster C/S Prop. Too small a ground wire causes erratically high voltage readings and spikes. Any voltage dropped across the regulator ground wire or its connections will be added to the system voltage. Make sure all connections are tight and that there is no paint on the connected parts. If the regulator is working but set at too high of a voltage, it will help to connect the yellow sense wire to the red output wire. If the above does not solve the high voltage, then replace the regulator. I'm using a B&C LR-3 regulator for the primary alternator and Bob N's 9005 LVM and OVM-14 for the stby alternator. The OVM trips at 16.4v. the LVM at 13.0v. What should the "gauge" in my panel have for a max value, redline, hi yellow, ( low yellow@ 13.0 per the 9005) , min value? Re min value, worst case, 8-9v will keep the ignition,& EFI working and they are fused for this scenario. The arcs are colored according to the following rationale: Anything over 15v is a badly functioning alternator regulator. 13 to 15 volts says the alternator is carrying all present system loads. 10.5 to 13 volts says alternator is off line and all energy is being supplied by battery. 10.5 and below . . . battery is 99% gone.
