Subject: Wire Size for Wing Lighting
I'm getting ready to close the right wing on my Murphy Super Rebel build and need to run the wires for my lights. I have two Whelan PLED 1L landing lights in a Grimes fixture, each pulls 1.2 Amps. I'm using LED position light replacement bulbs from PSA Enterprises, LED7STPL-12V in a standard Grimes position light fixture, each pulls less than .2 amps. Based on my reading/understanding of wire selection in the Aero-Electric Connection, I should be able to use 22 awg for each light - correct? That said, is there a reason to use heavier wire, i.e. 18 or 20 awg in case something changes in the future? Thanks, Jerry Folkerts SR #093 www.mykitlog.com/jfolkerts/

I need some help here with alternators! What is the difference between a 1 wire and a 3 wire system? Can a 1 wire setup be shut down with a switch as per over voltage protection... or does it have to be a 3 wire? Thanks Ron

Your option . . . but going back seems to be about as likely a move as putting inner tube tires on your car. Bob . . .

I'm not sure there's a uniform convention for 1 versus 2 versus 3 wire alternators. The 1-wire alternators I see for boats, RVs and utility vehicles have regulators built in. They have ONE b-lead that connects to the system and they automatically shut down internally when the alterantor is not turning. >Can a 1 wire setup be shut down with a switch as per over voltage protection No >... or does it have >to be a 3 wire? It certainly needs to have more than one wire, the second of which offers absolute control over field excitation. Check out B&C or Plane Power. They've provided for satisfaction of the legacy philosophy for putting alternators on airplanes. Bob . . .
