Hello group,
I am in the final documentation phase of my LANCAIR 360 project and starting
to copy my handmade - electrical - drawings to the computer. Therefore I am
looking for a good tool and a free of charge CAD program probably compatible
with ACAD.
Any hints recommendations are highly appreciated,
Thanks in advance,
Peter

I use Visual Cad, and that's not free, but you can use a full
featured copy of it for 30 days without paying, if that's all
you need. www.tritools.com/v6_demo.htm It does read some ACAD
files, and they try to keep up with all the ACAD versions, but
even Autocad can't read all of it's own versions.
However, I have also been looking at Draftsight and find that it
is a very good, free program.
www.3ds.com/products/draftsight/download-draftsight/
It is very versatile, and I've found it an excellent program for
my use, and, even though I haven't tried, it can read read and
write ACAD (.dwg) files

Harley,
When I go to the Draftsight website you provide below, I see the headline:
- -DraftSight: Professional-grade, free* CAD software
Can you please tell me what the asterisk after "free" means? -A lot of "f
ree" programs usually mean 30 day free trial, free if you sign up for somet
hing else, etc. I hesitate to sign up for this program until I get a better
understanding of what Dassault System's meaning of "free" is.
Thanks.

Totally free...if you are satisfied with using only the 2D
version, and are using it as an individual. If you want to use it
in your business, or the 3D version, you pay for it then.
I've had it installed for over a year, and I'm still using
it...it does ask you to "reactivate" it on occasion, but is just
a single click to do so, no additional information needed, and
that doesn't interfere with any work you are doing. I assume it
is just to be sure that you are still an individual user.
Besides having installed it on this desktop computer, I also have
it on my Windows 7 tablet computer, and have been using it there
for a couple of months.

Almost forgot . . .
There's also a selection of page-per-system wirebook drawings
you can download at:
http://tinyurl.com/9a5n8jb
If you're of the page=per=system persuasion, these drawings may
well reduce your wiring documentation task by more than half. Many
of the symbols are already in place for cut-n-paste. The view-per-page
organization is already set up to let you document the whole project
on one drawing while being able to print any combination of pages for
the final document.

Bob,
nanoCAD sounds like a pretty good product, but I went to their website and
noticed it's out of the Russian Federation. I'm not the kind of guy that de
means foreign products unless I have a very good reason, which also applies
to domestic products. I'm leery about anything that comes out of Russia an
d China now, because their governments do not hold anyone's feet to the fir
e when it comes to shenanigans. -I know that much malware comes out of th
ese two countries, and there's not much we can do about it. It's entirely p
ossible that nanoCAD might get compromised by hackers and deliver us a prod
uct we don't like. After the demise of the USSR, there were many talented p
rogrammers left behind without jobs. -Many of them migrated out to Israel
and Western countries to find good paying jobs, but many of them stayed be
hind to work real jobs and some became hackers. This is why I would rather
go with DraftSight and not nanoCAD. nanoCAD is comprised of a bunch of
developers, and not telling what anyone of them will do.
If this sounds xenophobic, rest assured it's not, because I don't think Das
sault is loaded up with hackers. -I just don't trust loose organizations
from Russia, China, Iran and other countries whose governments don't have t
he legal framework to take someone to jail or court if a foreigner gets att
acked in cyberspace. -Do you have such feelings about nanoCAD, or do you
trust them wholeheartedly?

It can be a simple 14 V tap from your NAV lights, or it can be a variable vo
ltage from a dimmer. You select it in setup for what ever you have to use, 5
, 14, 28 etc. or PHOTO to just use the internal sensor. And you can control t
he knobs and display separately. I'm not sure but I don't think it will foll
ow a PWM dimmer.
Section 5.3.7 in the "W" manual.

Sacha,
430W P4001 pins 39 and 40 are for lighting. Pin 39 is connected to
the dimmed lamp voltage and pin 40 to ground.
The Main Lighting configuration page selects whether that dimmed lamp
voltage is a maximum of 28V, 14V or 5V. You also have the choice of
auto dimming with ambient light conditions.
Connect the dimmer voltage even if you don't plan to use it.
Unfortunately, that was not done on my Cessna. The overhead red lamp
that illuminates the instrument panel affects the 430Ws idea of the
conditions, so the autodim function works very poorly.
There is a complicated configuration to match the rate of dimming that helps.
Let me know if you can't find a copy of the 430W installation manual.
I have rev G and can email it to you off list. Or perhaps, Bob, do
you want to put it in your archives ?

Tim and Jeff, thanks a lot for your replies.
For the moment (as i dont have a variable voltage supply) I'll just hook up the
lighting bus to +14 volts and use the auto dimming function on the GNS430.
What about the King KI-209 "Dimmer" pin? Is your understanding that is also meant
to be connected to a variable voltage supply? They don't mention anything
about it in the manual so its a "standard" thing.
Since the current consumption is low, I suppose I could build a variable voltage
supply by simply putting a variable resistor in series with the Dimmer circuit.
Does this sound like it would work?

Hi Hernador,
For 3-D CAD I bought Cheetah3D for $99US about 3 weeks ago. It is a Mac
only application, and I use it on a 27-inch iMac with OS X "Mountain
Lion". Like most 3-D software it has a steep learning curve; you have
to know a lot of things to do even simple renderings. It is extremely
powerful and can do animations and linked motions of parts.
BRL CAD is another 3-D application that can be used on Mac, Windows,
Unix, Linux, and others. Its price (free) is right, but unless you like
using a Unix-like interface it will be a frustrating experience. Its
learning curve is even steeper than Cheetah3D's.

Almost forgot . . .
There's also a selection of page-per-system wirebook drawings you can
download at:
http://tinyurl.com/9a5n8jb
If you're of the page=per=system persuasion, these drawings may well reduce
your wiring documentation task by more than half. Many of the symbols are
already in place for cut-n-paste. The view-per-page organization is already
set up to let you document the whole project on one drawing while being able
to print any combination of pages for the final document.

Hi Hernador,For 3-D CAD I bought Cheetah3D for $99US about 3 weeks ago. -
It is a Mac only application, and I use it on a 27-inch iMac with OS X "Mou
ntain Lion". -Like most 3-D software it has a steep learning curve; you h
ave to know a lot of things to do even simple renderings. -It is extremel
y powerful and can do animations and linked motions of parts.
BRL CAD is another 3-D application that can be used on Mac, Windows, Unix,
Linux, and others. -Its price (free) is right, but unless you like using
a Unix-like interface it will be a frustrating experience. -Its learning
curve is even steeper than Cheetah3D's.

I believe we had a CAD discussion about two months ago, but we didn't discu

I've had it installed for about 6 months and have used it
perhaps a dozen times. It's been scanned by three different
malware sniffer/cleaners on my computers. A review of
this link
http://tinyurl.com/94qwf3s
suggests that numerous scans by experts have discovered
no features of concern. The program is also in the download
catalog of numerous software archive sites who also
assert the software to be clean.
I believe the risk to be vanishingly small . . .

DraftSight is backed by a world class company - and its free - and its total
ly AutoCAD compatible - at least for your day to day 2D drafting stuff
The 3D stuff done by Dassault is SolidWork ... or Catia ... both are high en
d stuff ..Catia more so - I would trust the French over the Russians any day
:-) ... no offence to anyone Russians !!
I am sure the Nano stuff may be perfectly ok ... of Bob is using it ... Reme
mber that DS is a relatively new offering from Dassault ... I suppose they l
ike to hook you early ... give you 2D for free ... then you migrate to SW ..
. or the very big league ... Catia ...
All the best

countries, and there's not much we can do about it. It's entirely possible t
hat nanoCAD might get compromised by hackers and deliver us a product we don
't like. After the demise of the USSR, there were many talented programmers l
eft behind without jobs. Many of them migrated out to Israel and Western co
untries to find good paying jobs, but many of them stayed behind to work rea

Does anyone have an example of the type of dimmer that would be up to this task?
