What is the link to the circuit please - I have been looking on your web
site but not able to find it

After reviewing archives I have now attempted to construct Bob?s
?Contactor
Cooler?. I am very weak on electronics knowledge, but for the $20
investment, I gave it a shot.
I noticed that Caps come is different ratings and materials of
construction,
and for this stage of the experiment I decided to ignore this and simply
purchase the uf ratings as listed on the schematic. Do the voltage
ratings
or materials of construction matter to this device?
Not especially. Anything over 12v works.
I finished assembly today, and noticed that I did not purchase any
iN400X
diodes (I assume the X could be any available #?) I recognized the 400X
as
voltage spike protection for avionics, so I decided to proceed without a
diode across the contactor coil.
No, the 'x' means don't care. Any number from
0 to 9 is suited to the task.
The device worked for three cycles, about 5 seconds each, and simply no
longer operates the contactor. There was no smoke and no detectable
warmth.
I suspect that the missing diode allowed the coil V-spike to damage my
assembly?
That's a fair assumption. What does the contactor do?
If your IRF510 is shorted, the contactor will simply
pull in at full voltage. I suspect that this is what's
happening. Give us a voltage measurement on your contactor
coil when the device is powered up. Also a voltage
measurement at pin 3 of the 555 say 10 seconds after
the device is powered up.
If so, can anyone tell me which device is most likely to need
replacement?
(timer, transistor, diodes, resistors or caps) Not knowing much of
electronics, I only know how to test the resistors and diodes, but this
is
complicated by lack of isolation.
As Lord Kelvin opined many years ago:
?When you can measure what you are speaking about, and express it in
numbers, you know something about it, when you cannot express it in
numbers,
your knowledge is of a meager and unsatisfactory kind; it may be the
beginning of knowledge, but you have scarcely, in your thoughts advanced
to
the stage of science.?
Let's get the numbers. By the way, thanks
for taking this project on. Let's make sure
the outcome expands your knowledge and the
utility of your airplane.

Joe,
Not sure if the the little eyeball sold by VAn's (and Spruce) is incandescent,
but the light output compared to the EB Mini is like comparing a match to the
sun. The EB also is dimmable. The little eyeball needs to be fairly close to the
target to provide meaningful light, but they are inexpensive and smaller.

Those were originally incandescent. They would no doubt
benefit from an LED upgrade. some builders have ordered
red or white LED fixtures from our website
https://matronics.com/aeroelectric/Catalog/9002-100-5s.jpg
One of these mounted on both sides of the canopy frame
were used to flood the panel on RV3/4/8 projects.
They proved to be bright enough . . . in fact needed
to be dimmed for navigation in full darkness.

Thanks ! Do you know how much electrical noise this circuit generates ?

Should be tolerably low. It won't have
any radio frequency issues and conducted
audio frequency noise onto bus is very
low compared with other noises (like
alternator ripple).

All, I fly a trike wearing a full face Shoei helmet. While the helmet
doesn't seal my ears like headphones it does cut down the noise
considerably. It also cuts out my ability to hear my radio so I want to put
speakers and a small mic in the helmet. I did this once before
cannabalizing a Cobra VOX family radio for hang gliding. I don't want to
cannabalize my David Clarks this time so the speakers and mic will be
compatible with my hand held (a Vertex). Mouser has lots of mylar diaphragm
speakers of the right size and depth. Can anyone recommend a particular
speaker or mic cartridge that has worked for you?

For the earphones, have you tried a pair of stereo 'ear buds'? It would
be pretty simple to try, with a 1/4" to 1/8" adapter. I've used a couple
of different types with a regular aircraft radio/intercom, & they worked
fine without any impedance matching devices. A pair of these under an
el-cheapo noise canceling headset (plug in the ear buds & leave the
headset phone plug 'loose') makes an incredibly quiet environment.
For a while, Plantronics made a little gaming headset consisting of ear
buds with a tiny boom mic off one of the buds. I've got a couple of
pairs, & they work with a/c radios/intercoms except for the problem of
the mic boom being too short to get the mic directly in front of your lips.
You could probably cannibalize a regular gaming headset to get a mic,
and the earphones too, if you want regular over-the-ear style instead of
in-ear. Ebay & Amazon have hundreds of choices. Many are so inexpensive
that the entire headset costs less than what a/c headset makers want to
charge for just a replacement mic cartridge.
The impedance matching issue is often a non-issue, due to the typically
low output impedance in any device made within the last couple of decades.
