Subject: OT - Aera 560 question
Hi all, I suspect something is wrong with my Aera 560. Could anyone using the same portable give me some advice or opinion. Unlike ALL previous models of portable Garmin units I have owned, 1) this 560 does not show DTK (desired track degrees) and DIS (distance) between way points of a flight plan, when there is no position lock - the DTK and DIS columns (under the tabs) are blank. The columns are populated with data only when there is a position lock, but the data is not kept. The position lock should be irrelevant for calculating DTK and DIS between known way points of an active flight plan. Or maybe the 560 is programmed this way (?) 2) When Set OBS and Hold is invoked while in DirectTo or on active Flight Plan and the 560 is inside (no position lock), the unit promptly shuts off. It appears like a software issue. Garmin could not explain the problem - I asked them to reproduce it, but their support units, I was told, have GPS lock (real or synthetic). So they offered a unit swap at $400 (!) charge without guarantee that this will resolve the issue. The 560 software was just updated. Anyone having the same problem ? And one (technical, non-regulatory) question: has anyone interfaced an Aera 560 to an S-Tec 50 autopilot ? Thanks Rumen do not archive

    Subject: Rotax 912 Noisy Regulator
    From: "Guy Buchanan" <gebuchanan@cox.net>
A brief problem description: I changed from a fried Key West voltage regulator on the front of my firewall to a Rotax VR on the back of my firewall. (Kitfox w/ 912ULS.) Now the music input to my intercom (SLA-400 TSO) is muted because of noise coming into the intercom via the IC-200 radio. So far I've shielded the input all the way to the VR, tried a noise filter right in front of the DC bus, and a faraday cage over the VR. I've improved the problem to the point that I can hear the music up to about 3000 rpm, then it mutes. So I bought an oscilloscope and took some measurements today. I'm seeing a weird 20Hz 360mv spike downstream of the VR, and the VR input (generator output) looks terrible. (I thought it was a kind of square wave.) I can't seem to find what the 912 generator output is supposed to look like online. Any ideas? Any ideas what the downstream voltage spikes are? Thanks, -------- Guy Buchanan K-IV 1200 / 912Uls / Warp / 500 hours and flying again. Now a glider pilot too.
