Bob and all who reponded,
Thanks a lot for the facts and detailed explanations.
I do know that simpler is better, that a part not installed cannot fail,
etc.
But concerning the so peculiar Rotax 912iS engine, my partners decided -
and I do agree - that preventing pilot's errors is of highest priority.
So we are studying the possibility of grouping some functions or sequences.
The idea behind my relay question was powering an appliance via a
normally closed relay, and energize that relay (open the contacts) only
for testing once or twice during ground runup.
Still more funny questions to come !
Thanks again,

Subject: | Rotax 912iS : alternator relay ? |
Hi all,
Here is another Rotax 912iS funny question.
In its Operator's Manual, Rotax states that it has "an overvoltage
protection [...] integrated in the FUSEBOX".
Nevertheless some owners on the Rotax Owners Forum report having
experienced overvoltage events, which would mean that the regulator & OV
protection are not very reliable.
According to the Rotax wiring diagram, the main bus is connected to the
"fusebox" with no means of of disconnection (see attached picture of
Rotax wiring redrawn)
If for some reason the pilot wishes to remove power from the ship, he'll
open the master switch but the alternator may still deliver power to the
bus.
Wouldn't it be advisable to add an alternator relay and an OV protection ?
Thank you,

Wide receiver Greg Jennings was livid on the sideline, but coach Leslie Frazier defended his decision to give the drained defence a rest and allow at least a few more seconds for a comeback in case the Redskins scored. But Griffins next two passes were incomplete. On fourth-and-goal with 32 seconds left, his throw to the corner of the end zone was caught by Santana Moss with only one foot in bounds. Game over. After losing three games this year in the final minute, the Vikings finally pulled one out. replay reversed the touchdown call after he dived at the pylon and rolled

the lead on the next play. The NFC East, which fittingly for this season rhymes

Yep, that's right. I just pull the field breaker. My alternator comes on
with the battery. I don't have a separate position for alternator +
battery.

Subject: | Re: Rotax 912iS : alternator relay ? |
Gilles,
I modified your schematic and added information gleaned from Rotax-Owner.com.
As for over-voltage protection, an alternator switch could be inserted in the wire
going to X3.3 It might take you a minute or two to recognize the over-voltage
condition and shut off the switch. But most modern avionics are rated up
to 30 volts. And the battery will resist the increased voltage for a while.
Hundreds of RV-12s are flying without over-voltage protection. I am not necessarily
recommending not installing over-voltage protection, but it is an option.
