Jon,
That's a relief! I am most concerned about the labeling inside the cabin
and behind the instrument panel. Forward of the firewall will be very
simple in my plane and it won't matter much if the labels fade.

Subject: | Installing the GARMIN GMA350 all-digital Audio Panel/Mixer |
Good morning
I am now installing the Garmin GMA350 all-digital Audio Panel/Mixer and I
have a few questions.
To begin with, I'll post a couple of questions right now, and leave the
others for later.
This unit has a Failsafe Warn audio feature which allows the pilot to hear
an alarm even when the unit has gone west or it is Off (at least that's what
I understand it does).
The GMA350 has 4 alert audio inputs (each one with Hi and Lo pins), to
connect alert sources like altitude, terrain, AOA and such, and it has a
FAILSAFE WARN AUDIO IN Hi (to be connected to pin 29 of connector J3502).
The manual says that this "FAILSAFE WARN AUDIO IN Hi is heard during normal
operation as a fifth alert input".
First question: it seems that I should connect to this pin what I consider
the most important alert to be heard by the pilot, do you agree?
Then the manual has a "Caution" advise: "During failsafe mode both FAILSAFE
WARN AUDIO IN Hi and COM1 AUDIO INPUT are connected to the PILOT HEADSET
LEFT OUTPUT. During this time the output of the COM1 radio and the output of
the device connected to FAILSAFE WARN AUDIO IN HI will become shorted
together, potentially causing damage or interference. If the FAILSAFE WARN
AUDIO IN HI is used, it may be necessary to install summing resistors in
series between these sources and the inputs to the audio panel to protect
the outputs from damage."
Question is: where do I install these resistors, how many, and which
resistance and power labels?
Thanks in advance for your help
Carlos

This is aviation related but not strictly Aeroelectric. My friend in
Switzerland sent me link from Spiegel Online (german news magazine) with a
video about the Horten brothers flying wing, the Ho229. I can open all
videos except the Horten video, a red notice comes up "this video is not
available in your country". Is anyone here on the list enough of a hacker
to understand why this is, and is there a way around this? My father knew
one of the Hortens and I would like to watch this video instead of having
to travel to Switzerland to view it.

I googled "HO 229 video" and received links to several dozen related
videos. Could one of these be the one you are looking for? What is the
link you were given...it may be that the server is not available here,
and the video is at a different server.

Digital copyrights are often limited to a region or single country. A
common workaround is to subscribe to a VPN (virtual private network)
that's in the region/country of interest. Then the desired site sees you
as being in the same country as the VPN. This is somewhat cumbersome to
set up, though. An easier solution might be to get your friend to
capture the video and email it to you. Or, it might even be available on
youtube or other video site here in this country. It's not uncommon for
a program to have its view ability limited by which 'channel' you're
viewing it on. ex: BBC programming often can't be viewed on the British
BBC website from here in the USA, but you can see the same programming
on BBC USA.

Jurgen,
Go to the "youtube" web page and enter "Horton brothers flying wing" in the
search window. You will find lots of vidis.

Find a VPN service that. Makes you appear to be in Switzerland... then download

This thread should answer your questions:

Cut the audio input HI wire(s) and insert a resistor and capacitor in series with
the two cut ends. Posts 12 and 13 and 17 in the above thread offer good advice.
The values of the components are not critical.

Something I've observed about Sharpie and/or
magic marker inks. I have been using the
6qt 'shoeboxes' by Stearlite as dust tight
materials storage in my shops for several years.
I label the ends of the boxes with yellow vinyl
tape captioned with a Sharpie. The label on the
right is about 10 years old. The drop in letter
density compared to the label on the left is
observable.
Emacs!
The exposed lettering appears to literally
evaporate. Evaporation rate is probably temperature
and air flow dependent. There might also be effects
of ozone and/or hydrocarbons in the surrounding
air.
I've developed another technique for crafting these
labels. After captioning with the marker, I put a
layer of clear tape over the lettering.
. I'm thinking that the clear overlay will have a
profound effect on the robustness of my shop
labels. For wire labels laid on white heat shrink,
one might consider putting a layer of clear
shrink over the label.
I note too that Sharpies come in a 'permanent'
version which is also available in ultra-fine
points.

One of these days I'll conduct some experiments
with this marking methodology and I'll hang
some samples under the hoods of my vehicles.

You sure did come to the right place for peer reviews and critical
thinking. If you post I will be more than happy to review..but
I am not very talented in this area and normally do not comment unless
none of the many more qualified voices speak up. I do not have
electronic ignition and thus do not have to worry about my lawn mower
engine (IO-540) stopping if I screwed up my electrical system. I did
use Z13-8 and followed it closely knowing that it is tried and tested.
I have lost two alternators in my 700 hours in the airplane, one at
night, and did not have any worries. I designed and built for mission
=93 long cross country.

Greetings,
My name is Charlie and this is my first Matronics post.
I have a RV-8 with IO-360. It has a simple electrical system with one
alternator and one PC-680 Battery on the firewall. My mission is
daytime VFR. I am preparing to install dual electronic ignitions
(Simple Digital Systems - CPI). In consideration of an alternator
failure, I want each EI circuit to be independent of the other. To
achieve this, I am going to add a non-cranking (small) 7 AH AGM
auxiliary battery to operate one ignition. The other ignition will
operate off the main battery.
In reference to Z-35, I have a few questions please.
1. Why are the wires marked with an * required to be (quote) "As short
as practical. 6-inches long is ideal, 12-inches long max"?
2. In reference to the 12 AWG wire that runs from the battery
contractor to the S704-1 AUX Battery Relay. What are the positives
and/or negatives of placing a Schottky diode in that circuit between
main battery contractor and the S704-1 AUX Battery Relay.
3. Is there a preference for which battery, Main vs Aux, powers the
S704-1 AUX Battery Relay?
4. If I included a copy of my proposed wiring diagram could I get a
peer review of it?
Thank you,

Aux Battery
1. The * wires are not protected by fuses. The shorter they are, the less chance
of them getting in trouble.
2. The main advantage of a diode is that it prevents aux battery current from flowing
to unwanted locations. The disadvantage is that the aux battery will be
charged at a lower voltage. But that might not be a problem since the aux battery
will seldom be discharged.
3. I would energize each relay or contactor by its own respective battery. How
would the aux relay be energized if the aircraft electrical system and main
battery are dead?
4. It seems that Bob is reluctant to comment on proposed wiring architecture.
Many have tried to improve upon his proven designs but few succeed. It will
not hurt to post your wiring diagram.
