If you have TCAS you already have a transponder that has an antenna on the
top and bottom of the aircraft.

Yes, I seem to remember reading something about that.=C2- I have no plans
to fly into
Canada, but I wonder what will be required, hardware-wise, to satisfy their
requirement.=C2- I presume you would need a transponder designed for mult
iple antennas.
It looks like uAvionix's tailBeaconX satisfies the Canadians, but beyond
that, I have no idea!

=C2- =C2- The quater-wave, ground-plane antenna has a
=C2- =C2- radiation patter like shown in this illustration.
=C2- =C2- Very attenuated response 'below' the ground plane.
=C2- =C2- Probably even more attenuation on a 'large' ground
=C2- =C2- plane like an aircraft skin.
=C2- =C2- Looking at the elevation pattern we see the major
=C2- =C2- lobe is displaced about 30 degrees off the ground
=C2- =C2- plane . . . i.e. favoring ground based stations
=C2- =C2- when mounted upside down. Response out to the
=C2- =C2- horizon is only down 3db . . .
=C2- =C2- Talking to satellites? Got any links to
=C2- =C2- expand on that? I'm wondering what service is
=C2- =C2- expected to use xponder data . . . and for
=C2- =C2- what purpose.
=C2- Bob . . .
=C2- Un impeachable logic: George Carlin asked, "If black boxes

=C2- out of that stuff?"

It's just ADS-B, with a/c transmissions received by satellites. To the
FAA: Can I get a 'duh...'?
