This is a fairly common problem for me; I'm set up for receiving every post via email. I never find the original post in my spam/junk folders. Ditto, ditto! I have never managed to find a pattern in the messages that dont reach my inbox. I'm set up to get individual emails from the list, the way everyone did back in prehistoric times before web-based forums. After Matt added the web-based format, we were allowed to keep various forms of email delivery, or move to the forum format. I chose to stay with email format because it's a 'push' type system; I don't (normally) need to remember to actively sign in to a web site to see messages because they show up in my email inbox. Another inconsistency is that Matt's 'boilerplate' that appears at the bottom of most messages doesn't show up in some users' messages. For instance, it shows up with your messages (I snipped it out for this reply), but it never shows up in Bob's messages. I've assumed that it was due to some of us being on email delivery and some of us using the forum format, but I have no way to verify that. Charlie

Its an outrunner, the outside case spins. No gearbox in the Monkworkz PM alternator: Yep, it's direct drive, the only thing between the generator shaft and the vacuum spline gear is a shear coupling. Joe - thanks for the URL, but I do not have any trouble seeing all messages when I use a web browser. I normally read messages using my local e-mail client which downloads, to my own machine, messages from my several e-mail accounts and presents them all for reading in one place. It seems that either my e-mail client or the Matronics mail server has some sort of occasional blind spot, and a message is not downloaded to my own machine. It doesnt seem to happen all that frequently, so I dont want to adopt the habit of daily going off to look at the Matronics messages in a web browser, just on the off-chance that (as far as my mail client is concerned) a message might have disappeared. >If OV protection is used, You'd need a relay on the output anyway. Here's their installation data: http://aeroelectric.com/Mfgr_Data/Monkworkx/MZ-30L%20Installation%20and%20Operation%20Manual%202021.pdf Seems it has a 'outrunner' style magnet housing like most PM alternators. It's a 3 phase machine which goes a long way toward achieving this power density . . . along with forced air cooling. >I took a quick look at their web page, and it seems a safe bet that >it's a high output brushless DC motor (really inverter driven AC) >like you'd see on a big RC plane, that's being used as a generator >instead. We note that the Monkworks machine's outside diameter is quite small compared to other products . . . barely larger than the footprint of the vacuum pump pad. The companion electronics has ov protection built in. It also needs forced air cooling . . . not surprising given it's small volume and footprint >On a completely different subject, is anyone having an issue like >mine, on receiving emails from the list? >I frequently see the reply (as this one, which is Bob's reply), but >I never see the original message unless I log into the Matronics >*forum* & find the thread. Charlie, It occurred to me that I'd not wandered through the offerings in RC motors for some time. A client asked me to sift through the catalogs about 10 years ago with the thought of adapting a 'tiny' motor to an actuator design. We didn't find anything useful the task at that time. Revisiting the market today reveals some motors on the BEEFY end of the spectrum with current and Kv ratings that just MIGHT lend themselves to a direct drive, 3 phase, pm alternator design. Some interesting finds: https://tinyurl.com/yy892euu https://tinyurl.com/39jtnhyj https://tinyurl.com/2p8stwb7 https://tinyurl.com/4kcmkazf It might be that none of these would be optimal candidates, at least they suggest some possibilities. Subject: Hangar hoist motor question
    From: "rparigoris" <rparigor@hotmail.com>
Hi Group A slightly off topic question: I have a 1,100lb electric hoist in hangar. I want to install it on an electric trolley. In past used Northern tool trolleys. Very simple, motor has 3 wires. 1 wire gets hooked up to neutral and when you put power to right wire it goes right and if you put power to the left wire it goes left. There's a capacitor that stays permanently connected between left and right. Problem is the motor was not very powerful and it would only drive 1 side, so if weight wasn't distributed just perfect it would either sit and spin or get jammed sideways and I beam. I bought a second one and made it drive both sides. Worked great. I just paralleled motors. It wasn't quite happy with only 1 capacitor so I paralleled two. Starting torque was greatly increased using 2 capacitors with the 2 motors paralleled. So on the Northern tool trolleys, the capacitors stayed permanently connected to right and left. Now for my current project, Northern tools no longer offers the electric trolley. I purchased a pair of no name China 200 watt knock offs. Motor is very similar with 3 wires. It has a capacitor that is disconnected when off. Then it connects the capacitor between left and right wires for either left or right. They are using a very switch with jumpers to accomplish this task. I want to extend the 4' pendant wire to 25' as I have done with the Northern Tool units. It's not very convenient to try and house 2 capacitors in the pendant. It's very to house 2 capacitors on the hoist. I would prefer to just permanently connect the 2 paralleled capacitors at the hoist to left and right. Is there a reason to use the complicated disconnect the capacitors between left and right when unit is off? The capacitors for the 200 watt motor: CBB60 40uF =/- 5% 450VAC C SO SH 25/70/21 50/60HZ 1.770" Diameter 3.645" Length Thx. Ron P.
