A GFI should never be "in series" in an outlet circuit, that would be a gro ss wiring error.=C2- The proper term is daisy-chained.=C2- This is wher e additional outlets are installed down-stream of a GFI and the GFI provide s ground fault protection to those outlets.=C2-=C2- As I'm sure most people on this thread understand, the down-stream outlets must be connected to the proper terminals on the GFI and the are in paralle l, not series. This practice is quite common as a cost-saving maneuver by contractors.=C2 - They install 1 GFI to protect a bunch of down-stream outlets instead of installing an individual GFI at each location.=C2- Thus saving a few buc ks. War Stories:#1 I have helped many friends and family, over the years, when they call and s ay "the outlets in some room, usually a bathroom, or an outside outlet, don 't work - but they were working yesterday".=C2- But the outlet in questio n is not a GFI.=C2-=C2- I tell them to go find the single GFI, (which can turn into a scavenger hun t).=C2- Look in the garage, basement, or back bathroom and press the rese t button.=C2- I always get a call back a few minutes later "you're a geni us!". #2 When I moved into my house about 6 years ago, I had a GFI (installed in the downstairs bathroom) that would mysteriously and seemingly randomly trip e very couple of weeks. Weird.Long story short (pun intended;)... My wife had placed some twinkle lights in the garden.=C2- The sprinklers would run a couple of times a week at 0400.=C2- If the twinkle lights had been left on all night, the GFI would be tripped.=C2- If not, the lights would dry out over the next day and everything worked fine.=C2- Took a while to fig ure that one out :) -Jeff On Friday, November 3, 2023 at 07:06:33 PM PDT, Dave Saylor wrote: Glen and Skywagonguy and all, Same here, no GFCIs in series.=C2- The subpanel is powered by a standard breaker right off the main panel.=C2- The common and two power leads are wired to the right buses.=C2- There is a dedicated ground wire tying the main panel=C2-and subpanel together.=C2- It's a little odd though that the ground=C2-wire is several sizes smaller than the other three.=C2- I don't think that would cause a problem, but I wonder how much current it w ould carry over its 250' run. Today I moved the GFCI breaker to a circuit that just has a single outlet a nd a light, immediately=C2-adjacent to the subpanel.=C2- I replaced the GFCI breaker on the=C2-outdoor plugs with a standard breaker, and I will put a GFCI breaker at the plug I use the most.=C2- Fingers crossed, I ho pe to learn another thing or two. Thanks everyone for great suggestions. --Dave On Tue, Oct 31, 2023 at 6:41=AFPM user9253 wrote: GFCI breakers and outlets are very sensitive.=C2- And some are more sensi tive than others.=C2- And some are too sensitive.=C2- =C2-All it takes is a few milliamps difference between the hot and neutral to trip.=C2- 50 milliamps through a person's heart can stop it from beating.=C2- I suggest that you replace t he GFCI breaker with a standard breaker.=C2- Then replace every outlet with a GFC I outlet with no other outlets downstream of each GFCI outlet.=C2- Now if a GFCI outlet trips, either the load is defective or else the GFCI outlet is defec tive.=C2- If a GFCI outlet trips off, then power is only lost to whatever is plugged int o that one outlet.=C2- The other GFCI outs should not be affected. -------- Joe Gores Read this topic online here: http://forums.matronics.com/viewtopic.php?p=511684#511684 - Electric-List" rel="noreferrer" target="_blank">http://www.matronics.co m/Navigator?AeroElectric-List FORUMS - eferrer" target="_blank">http://forums.matronics.com WIKI - errer" target="_blank">http://wiki.matronics.com b Site - =C2- =C2- =C2- =C2- =C2- -Matt Dralle, List Admin. ="noreferrer" target="_blank">https://matronics.com/contribution ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Other Matronics Email List Services ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Post A New Message aeroelectric-list@matronics.com UN/SUBSCRIBE http://www.matronics.com/subscription List FAQ http://www.matronics.com/FAQ/AeroElectric-List.htm Web Forum Interface To Lists http://forums.matronics.com Matronics List Wiki http://wiki.matronics.com Full Archive Search Engine http://www.matronics.com/search 7-Day List Browse http://www.matronics.com/browse/aeroelectric-list Browse Digests http://www.matronics.com/digest/aeroelectric-list Browse Other Lists http://www.matronics.com/browse Live Online Chat! http://www.matronics.com/chat Archive Downloading http://www.matronics.com/archives Photo Share http://www.matronics.com/photoshare Other Email Lists http://www.matronics.com/emaillists Contributions http://www.matronics.com/contribution ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- These Email List Services are sponsored solely by Matronics and through the generous Contributions of its members.
