Adding a relay keeps the energy in when the circuit is off and makes for reliable reading immediately upon activation (otherwise the super capacitor needs to charge up to provide an accurate reading, and also slowly discharges after shutdown). In your case you might need 3 each, but the whole setup was trivially inexpensive.
