Subject: | Switching Antenna Between Panel-Mount & Handheld Radios |
The subject of switching an airplane's antenna between a panel-mounted VHF comm
radio and a handheld backup has been discussed here several times in the past,
with no good solution (at least none that I can recall!). While poking around
on eBay this evening I came upon something that may just be the answer we've
been looking for: a coaxial relay.
Rather than post a link to a specific listing that will eventually disappear, I'll
give you an eBay search link: Toyo Tsusho CX-230 (https://tinyurl.com/ToyoTsushoCX230)
Connect the panel mounted radio to the relay's normally open BNC, the handheld
to the normally closed BNC and the antenna to the common BNC. Wire the relay's
coil, through a SPST switch (normally closed), so that the relay pulls in whenever
the Battery Master Switch is turned on. This way, any time electrical power
is present and the switch is closed, the panel mounted radio is connected
to the antenna, and any time power is lost or the switch is opened, the handheld
is connected to the antenna.
It'll take a little bit of creativity in mounting the relay so its exposed solenoid
mechanism can't touch anything, but that's easily doable.
Datasheet for the relay is attached below.
