It looks like the insulation has deteriorated, but the metal is still in good
condition. Can you replace the insulation with something, perhaps a piece of
plastic tubing or a hard plastic bushing? Of course the plastic would have to
be
split to get it around the wires. Maybe add a dab of E6000 to hold everything
together.

I think the originals were made of leather. And yes, you could probably replace
that piece with something more modern.
Or, could you adapt something like these, adding your own securing device for the
wire?
