A couple thoughts... - the baggage area is weight limited (I think 30# on my particular plane) - a glass panel would be nice, but certainly not needed. They can also be a distraction when your eyes should be looking outside the plane 99% of the time. Recent studies are showing they don't contribute to safety, at least not for VFR flying. - XM weather. Nice to have, depending on the typical weather in your part of the country. For some of us it is usually VFR with thunderstorms visible 50 miles away or hard IFR so it isn't as much of an issue. - hangar... if I had to forego a glass panel and other bells & whistles in return for having a hangar, I'd go for the hangar. It'll protect your resale value and lower your insurance costs, so the long-term cost of a hangar is somewhat less than what the hangar rent is. At my airport hangars run from $90 - $160 / month. Of course some metro airports are many times that cost. Make sure you research insurance costs... experimental and SLSA's are not cheap to insure. - autopilot... I've only used autopilots in Cessna's and Mooney's, so can't comment about how well they may work in a light wing-loading plane like an Allegro that is more susceptible to turbulence. - remember... the more stuff installed in an airplane, the more there is to go wrong. Simplicity generally increases reliability and decreases maintenance costs. - if you haven't owned a plane before, you may find that you won't fly as many cross-country trips as you think you will. That's probably true for 70% of new plane owners. Hopefully that gives you a few more things to think about. Of course much of it comes down to personal preference, budget and how you'll use the plane. There is no perfect plane. The trick is finding the balance of compromises that work out best for you. Good luck! Brad, Forgive the delay in responding, for some reason email notifications had been turned off... I've got a few requirements for my mission, almost all of which is less than 300, with one potential up to 400 for a grandparent in Indiana (400.2, in fact). Realistically that far away, i'd expect to be 4 hours realistically for any LSA, fast or slow, and that would probably require a fuel/restroom stop for me. I'm currently looking more toward an SLSA aircraft, however would be willing to consider an ELSA from an experienced builder -- I do not have a desire to build my own aircraft at this time, but would probably want to do something like that down the road. I've been flying a Sportcruiser for the past few months, and while I have enjoyed it, the plane is almost 2 hours drive away, which does inhibit my usage quite a bit. I would have flown this past weekend to my vacation destination, for example (25 minute flight vs 2 hour car ride + the joy of getting there by air!) As for load, the allegro doesn't seem to be able to be beat, however I'd really prefer glass cockpit, xm weather, and an autopilot, which it doesn't seem like most of them have. As for budget, i'd like to stay in the 50-75k range, as thats what I believe my partner and I can handle. The other concern for the Allegro, is the storage... I'm not sure that we'd be able to swing a hanger all year, and it does surely seem that with a fiberglass aircraft, they seem to want them stored inside... even the metal ones seem to need to be indoor kept... Rob, I just thought I'd jump in. Me and the "Skeeter" (Allegro N44469) have been to 48 states & 120+ airports. I usually fly a max of 600 miles per day, which is 2-fuel stops. I try for a 2-hour turn around. That gives time for gas, bio-break and weather brief. I use an AnywhereMap touchscreen ATC for NAV system. More features and way less than Garmin. Those big clear doors make the Allegro great for inflight photography. Happy flying, Jim N44469 --- rob.wilmoth@gmail.com wrote: From: "theskunk" Subject: Allegro-List: Re: 181 mph Allegro! That's impressive. I don't think I've even had my Allegro to 48 airports. And only 4 or 5 states. Well done! You're right, 600 miles is usually enough for one day and that's if the weather cooperates. I did replace my seat-bottom foam with temperfoam (CONFOR foam) for a lot more comfort on long trips. http://www.aviationsupplyonline.com/custom.em?pid=548924 As I recall I used a laminate of 1" pink (soft) and 1" blue (medium). It was an easy project, especially since I didn't do the seat-back. ...brad. -----Original Message----- From: owner-allegro-list-server@matronics.com [mailto:owner-allegro-list-server@matronics.com] On Behalf Of jlhazen@copper.net Sent: Monday, June 04, 2012 9:55 AM Subject: Re: Allegro-List: Re: 181 mph Allegro!
