Anyone have any experience with Bendix Scintilla
magnetos and/or with upgrading the mags on a Lycoming
O-145 B2 engine; or adding a starter to that engine?

Good morning guys.
I'm also not an A&P -- I'm the moderator who started this list as a
spin-off from the Metalshapers list.
It's nice to see a little activity here. This would be a good time for some
introductions.
Thanks for getting it kicked off.
The group has 190 members. That's a lot of members for such a quiet group.
This group is called A&P -- but I originally set it up for Airframe &
Powerplant Mechanics and home builders -- so it's a fairly general aircraft
group, or at least that was the original intention.
If you guys will introduce yourselves that will help get the ball rolling
here. And if you have any comments on topics or the direction of the group
in general -- please let us know.
Not being involved in aircraft, I'm not the ideal moderator... so I could
use some volunteers to moderate and direct the group. So if anyone is
interested -- let me know.

Well I am working on getting a new non-certified engine monitor to the
market, www.sterntech.com. I started this product to create an engine
monitor for my father-in-law who is building a 601.
I joined the list to try and keep informed of the problems that A&P's have
and see what features could be added to the monitor to help mechanics and
pilots.

Hi Perry,
I have a GO-145 C3, 75hp. On this engine the C1 was one mag,C2 was two
mags and C3 was two mags W/ starter and generator. I assume the O-145 was
the same configuration. Starters and generators seem to be none existent
(They were Ellipse,I believe) and the accessory case w/ 4 holes is pretty
hard to come by. Mine has the 3 case but no starter or mag, just cover
plates.

oops, I hit the wrong return. Instant replay
Gary here, from AuCountry (that's Gold Country for those of youtrying to
figure it out) Aviation in Southern California.=A0 I'm an A&P/IA and specialize
in
Grumman American (Gulfstream-American, American General) Tigers and Cheetahs.
I have a website (www.AuCountry.com) and I do more than just work on
Grummans.
Over the past 5 years, I've developed,
1) a fiberglass eyebrow to replace the plastic one (goes over the
instruments and has lights in it.) I also made an eyebrow from early Cherokee's.
It's possible I could be making one for a Bonanza in the near future.
2) larger cooling air exit ramps for Cheetahs and Tigers. They has shown
to drop CHTs and oil temps by 15-30 degrees.
3) and a new cowling for Cheetahs and Tigers. Right now I am testing
three different configurations for the bottom of the cowling. The one I'm
testing right now has produced 150 knots (true) out of a really dirty Tiger.
4) and soon to come, I'll be the supplier (through Unlimited Composite
Designs, UCD) of the dorsil fins on Grummans, drilled control yokes for
push-to-talk, and more efficient wheel pants for Tigers and Cheetahs. Incidently,
if you
have an application that i can adapt the wheel pants to, let me know. These
wheel pants will look like the ones on the Cirrus.
My composites guy, Dave, at UCD, has developed carbon fiber hoods for cars,
cowling and interior parts, gear doors, rudder caps, nose bowls and numerous
other small parts for Cessna 310s, Dave is also the supplier for the Johnston
wingtips for the Piper Comanche.
Dave has also built ramps for getting planes onto scales capable of
supporting over 14,000 lbs. These ramps are made out of carbon fiber. He has
made
handicap ramps also. They were a piece-o-cake compared to the aircraft ramps.
If you need anything built out of fiberglas or carbon, let me know. Dave's
shop rate is half of what it should be.

Hi Folks,
I have been on this list for months and have noticed almost no posts until
yesterday.I am on a little farm strip S of Dundee,NY. Been working on older
aircraft for a few years under an A&P IA, but have always wanted to have my
A&P, so I enrolled in and attended Baker's School in Nashville and received
my certificate last week.
Most of what I do is rag and tube. In recent years a Tripacer, Kitfox,Funk
,J-3 Cub and I have an Aeronca 65CA in the hanger rafters. I am trying to
get the Cub finished up as we speak.

I am in Columbus, Ohio and keep a 1940 Porterfield
LC-65 Collegiate at Packer Field - K5E9(2 nicely
maintained grass strips) in Radnor, Ohio about 25
miles northwest of here.
I am also working on odd occasions under an A&P IA,
but am attending A&P classes at night currently and
hope to have my powerplant certificate in short order
(airframe to follow in a few years).
I am currently maintenancing one of the old Bendix
Scintilla mags because of hard starting on the
Porterfield (no electrical system; and no STC for
impulse couplings or shower of sparks that I can
find).

I have had a number of people ask me about where and how I received my A&P.
This link will take you to anything you need to know.

If you need anything else,e-mail me at asq1@adelphia.net or call me at
607-292-6318. The main requirement is 30 months work in the field and a
recommendation from a current A&P or A&P IA. I put in my 30mo.++ over a
period of 35yrs.

Perry,
I have always found the Porterfield an interesting bird, but I think I have
only seen a couple.May drop by one day. The mags are good mags, but w/o the
impulse they are touchy to start. I sent both mine from the Funk to Savage
Magneto in Cal. and they made them new again, but it was pretty pricy. I have
only started it 5-6 times ,but it starts on the 1st or 2nd blade.
Good luck on the P.
Larry

Oops -- Pardon me guys -- I got this list mixed up with another A&P list.
My aplogies.
I certainly had nothing to do with starting this list and I have no idea
how many are in this list.
I'll try to pay better attention next time.
But it's still nice to see the activity.

Thanks for the follow-up Larry.
Naturally you are always welcome. Typically we have
an open house in late summer and I will let you know
the date. There are a number of interesting birds on
the field including 3 Stearmans, a Beech 18, Cessna
140, a Cub, an Acro-Sport, a New Standard, a T-6 and a
BT-15. A lot of very nice folks as well!
