Wes and Bob: when I got my ticket the only real paying opportunities
were at the big airline facilities in places like SF, Chicago, etc.
I didn't want to be a shop rat in a big city area. I checked out a
small
flight service in my hometown area who would have hired me but
at a sub-living wage. I've heard all those "pay your dues" stories
but wasn't interested in starving my family to make some other guy
rich. -So I went into industrial mechanics, HVAC, millwright, etc and
never regretted it. I maintained my own plane for 30 years.
The idea of working part time fixing airplanes in retirement sounds
pretty good, however this area (upstate NY) has gone into an airplane
decline. Not much action. Its all happening in the west and the south.
I receive the daily Kolb-list, my MkIII has 40+ hours on it and
is in my basement shop for the winter. I'm currently rebuilding
my bathroom.

I've been signed on to the A&PMech list for several months and yours are
the first e-mails I have seen... Perhaps I had something crossed up on this
end. Anyway, I'm 60 and have worked as a Millwright for over 40 years. 14
years ago, after finally getting a private ticket I bought a tail kit for an
RV-6A. I realized I was in over my head and joined a flying club in order to
help out on maintaining the club aircraft and hopefully learn something.
Long story short...I got my A and P about 5 years ago, flew the RV in Sept
of 04 and have started on a Flybaby. I still work on repairs on Wednesday
afternoons and every Saturday. We do rebuild and maintenance on Cessna's,
Piper's and a couple of Mooney's and have restored 2- 7AC Champs and a 41
J3 Cub...next project is an Ercoupe.
I probably wouldn't have joined in if I hadn't been struck by the many
similarities we seem to have in common. If any of you are ever in the
Louisville Ky area drop in at Bluelick Airport, south of SDF. By the way, I
agree, A & P work at a small FBO is a great learning experiance, and good
past time for someone who is retired...but you can't live on the money.
