Capen" Subject: Avionics-List: Two VOR/GS/LOC one antenna Folks, I have two VOR/GS/LOC radios 1. Apollo (now Garmin) SL-30 2. Narco NAV122D/GPS Attached to a Comant CI-182 dual whisker antenna mounted on top ov my VS in my RV6A. The Narco requires a diplexer which is installed and there is aCoax T-Connectorbefore the diplexer as the SL-30 doesn't need to be seperated. Recently, I was doing some practice work for my IFR training - holds at an intercept - requiring two VOR's. Consistently, the SL-30 can pick up either station while the NAV122D is flaky with both stations - but eventually will bring me to the intercept point. I'm gonna guess it's not the antenna - as the SL-30 brings it in fine. My thoughts go to three possible culprits.....the T-Connector, the diplexer, or the radio...question is, how to tell which one? Getting the Narco repaired will bring the "Mission Impossible" theme song in the background - with Narco recently going under. The diplexer is probably easily replaceable for just a few bucks as well as replacing the T-Connector with a Comant splitter (CI-5120). Any opinions out there? I would really rather not replace the radio if the other items may really be the culprit......and I will probably need both VOR's to finish my IFR training and take my checkride. Thanks in advance! You won't have GS but re-flying your practice holds should let you evaluate if the signal getting to the Narco is degraded. You can use the SL-30 standby freq and obs for the 2nd Nav. The SL-30 is a great radio and routinely locks on stations 10-20nm (at ~100nm) before my 430W. The split for my 430W is done the same way as yours, a diplexer and T-connector.
