Subject: | handheld problems |
Let me start by saying I'm the village idiot when it comes to radios so hopefully
someone can point out the obvious problem to me. I'm trying to use my handheld
(Vertex VXA 150) along with a set of Peltor 7004 headsets to communicate
from my Kitfox. On the ground with the engine off everyone around the airport
hears me fine. Once the engine is started everyone complains about background
noise or static when I transmit. A FOB unicom can just barely hear me from
5 miles out. I receive fine in flight. The radio is not wired into the aircraft
power, I'm using the radio's battery. It is the same for both the rubber
ducky antenna and the external aircraft mounted antenna. The headset works
fine in other aircraft. I'm wondering if the headset is picking up too much
background noise ?
thanks, EG

Most likely - The microphone should be touching your lips, and there are
mic shrouds available with a hole pointing to the speaker, and a covered
back to reject other sound sources. (Wind, engine noise.)

Eg
On my older icom if I press the transmit switch on the radio it also
transmits all the noise from the radio mic as well as from my headset
mic. That is same symptoms as you seem to have. The only way to use it
in flight without all the noise is to plug in an optional remote
transmit switch which then only transmits from my headset mic. Think the
icom switch was around $20. from Spruce.
