Ron.... The web site you sent was fabulous and addressed the same
problem as I have. I found cables at Avstat for 62.37 each if anyone is
interested.
One comment about your statement above. They are important, but I from
my understanding, they pull the uplock bracket into place instead of out
of the way. The failure mode would be that one would not have any uplock
at all.
The spring is what pulls the block out of the way.

I Had a great experience with Select Aircraft Inc. when rebuilding my
E-80 starter last month. They did a great job and had a quick
turn-around. Contact them at Phone 972/227-9581.

You can check if the oil is coming from the stater internal seal by removing
the brush cover on the rear. If oil is present the seal is leaking.

I have seen the error of my ways.
But I still recall somebody that had gear problems because of the uplock
cable. Can't remember who, but I *do* remember that the cable got bollixed
up in the guides or sheaths or something, and jammed.
Luckily (?) my plane has "only" had cabling problems with the assist step
cable, and it has fouled up and broken twice. POW! And I had caught it a
third time before breakage. It always unravels at the pulley/fairing as it
turns up & aft from the nosewheel, and eventually jams and/or breaks at that
point.
