--> Beech-List message posted by: "Doug Hodde" <hodde@olcwireless.net>
I appreciate all the advice I got from you guys on the G35.
I'm learning fast.
My A&I has been taking care of this plane for the last 10 years. He does
quite a bit of Bonanza work, and has been an A&P for 53 years.
The guy who owns the plane couldn't believe the compressions were low and
went out and flew it. I think he thought the flight might loosen up things
and help the compressions. They are rechecking the compressions as I type.
The guy who has it says he will do a top overhaul and an annual prior to the
sale if I want him to.
I have learned that there is only one gear motor - My mistake.
The guy who has it, took it in trade on his V35, and it had not flown for 6
months til yesterday.
I will be going to the website and trying to download the prebuy checklist.
I was an auto mechanic prior to my current job, so I think I could fix most
of this stuff myself, but I am a little concerned about getting too deep
into it due to the legalities (I'm not an A&P). It sounds like you guys do
a lot of work on your own planes - What do you feel comfortable comfortable
doing?
My A&I says that for the last few years the owner has spent about $100 a
month on average on maintainence surprises, and he says this is a good plane
and he has no financial interest in the deal, so I'm inclined to believe
him.
My A&I has three complete E225's and a dozen spare cylinders for it, so he
tells me not to worry too much about engine parts.
Which windshield do you guys recommend and how much should I expect it to
cost? I guess I don't understand the difference between the Speed Slope
Windshield and the one piece windshield - Is there a difference?
Thansk again - Doug

Good Morning Doug,
You and that G35 might be the perfect match. Sounds
like you have the right mechanic. I would still
suggest that you try to make a personal contact with
another long time owner of an early Bonanza before you
make the leap.
Oh yes, the one piece windshield is available in the
standard slope that was used prior to about 1968 and
the steeper slope that has been used ever since.
There are a couple of different options when it comes
to installing the windshields. It can be combined with
a major modification to the instrument panel or you
can just stick in a new windshield.
There are even at least two different options for the
modification to allow for a speed slope windshield and
at least two different methods of fastening the window
to the aircraft.
Please get to a local Bonanza group flyin so that all
of these variances can be seen in person. Why don't
you try to make it to Rough River this weekend. We
start on Thursday and go home on Sunday. It would be
the best education you could get in three days. Where
are you located?

I'd agree with Bob on thinking about a panel replacement while the
windshield is out. To get the old panel out requires access to a bunch
of screws and rivits as well as basically cutting most of the mounts out
to replace the panel.
I have an old C35 that I have a replaced panel. Here are a few pictures
to give you an idea of what might be involved in making the changeover
(I have a custom cut panel.. Well, until I got the nikita out :-), not
the Dshannon mod...)
http://www.geekstyle.net/gallery/N5877C-Instrument-Panel-Repairs
Still posting pictures as I take them off my camera... This turned out
to become a top-end on my plane and with all the down time, I took the
panel out and added a GNS480/MX20 combo with some other stuff :-) If
you EVER need to work on an older Bonanza panel for any reason, it's a
nightmare getting to the wiring unless you've done something like this
to allow for a complete panel removal (AMP twist connects, etc to pull
the panel out)

Doug-
The one-piece windshield has the same contour as the existing windshield,
but doesn't have the center column. It is a nice improvement.
The speed-slope windshield has a different contour. The bottom edge is
extended out almost to the firewall. This gives the plane a much sleeker
look, and opens up the interior a bit as well. It costs a bit more to
install, and will need some paint work afterwards as there is an aluminum
skin piece about 2" wide along the entire bottom edge of the windshield.

While many shops do this kind of work, Jim Klug has a reputation for being
the best in the biz. He travels the country so will eventually be in your
area. I know you are mechanically inclined, but installing the windshields
does require a lot of finesse, and many that have done it themselves swear
up and down that they wish they had had Jim do it. So think about it.
Another advantage to the SS is that it makes working behind the panel much
easier. Your avionics guy will love you for it. Bobs advice about putting
in a new panel is great if you can swing the cost.
Hope this helps.

Another person who travels the country installing windshields (and tip
tanks and big baggage doors and other stuff) is Douglas Kelly
(888-328-4629). He is closely associated with Beryl D'Shannon although I
don't know if he is actually an employee of theirs. I had him replace my
windshield several years ago and he did an excellent job.
As part of the Speedslope windshield installation, Doug cuts out your
permanent glareshield and installs a removeable glareshield. I'm pretty
sure that Jim Klug does the same thing. That is what makes it SO much
easier to access behind the panel when you need to.
As for upgrading the panel, take a look at my panel at
http://www.rkt-tech.com/n122x. That panel was fabricated and installed by
Penn Avionics in Collegeville, PA. Price was approximately a third of what
I was quoted for a Beryl D'Shannon panel, although the work is a lot less,
too ... mine is what people call a "piano keys up" panel that doesn't
require any structural changes and doesn't require an STC.

Eric,
Thanks for posting pics and narrating your project. I
found it very motivating and am going to save it.
Just further proof that a restored Bonanza beats the
pants off a new 172 any day and is still cheaper...
