      Thanks for the input Tim.  This is getting interesting.  I'm told that the
      alternator was replaced when the engine was overhauled (less than 5 months
      ago).  So it's still worth looking at, but may be less of a suspect than I
      thought.  
      
      Do you think loose or corroded battery connections could cause this
      behavior?

      Doug, check the voltage output of the alternator. If one of the diodes is
      bad,
      the voltage will be above 12 volts, but less than 14 volts. Might be time to
      have
      the alternator looked at. Worn commutator brushes will give the same
      symptom.
