i was watching espn2 and they had aerobatic performers flying planes. i just got
my pvt in january this year and would like to know a few things.
how hard do you pull on the controls to perform a loop? I have been renting a
172 and with a firm pull i was able to get the plane to go 90 upward, but it shook
a bit and i was afraid to try to get it to finish the loop because it slowed
down so much.
also, how much altitude do you lose in one complete roll of the the plane. I started
at 4.5 AGL and finished at about 2.0 AGL and the plane picked up a lot
of speed (175 kts). i don't remember seeing the planes on espn2 lose that much
altitude.

Do NOT perform such maneuvers in a 172. You are RISKING DEATH for yourself, not
to mention the poor soul renting the a/c after you.
Are you an idiot? How did you get your license acting in such manner?
Where do you fly out of? How old and how stupid are you?
I'd sooner give you a beating on the ramp than let you fly another plane. Get
serious about flying or LEAVE.

Look in the 172 Owner's Manual. Loops and rolls are not permitted.

Cessna 172 is not certified for aerobatics. Not only that it probably isn't
built strong enough to perform then.
The only inteligent thing for someone that wants to do aerobatics is to take
some lessons.
That is all I will say. I am sure you will get flamed.

Look, I KNOW that the loops and rolls are not permitted "according to the manual",
but there is a guy at my airport who says that ALL aircraft are built to tolerances
much greater than the specifications in "the manual".
I didn't see ANY signs of damage to the plane. It didn't make any funny noises,
or creak or ANYthing like that.
If you are just going to chastise me for "pushing the envelope" a bit, then save
it. I am a very good pilot. I got my license in 43 hours and missed only 1
on the written.

You didn't see any damage. Did you pull the inspection plates. Did you
remove the panel at the rear of the baggage compartment and check the
bulkheads and stringers. Did you check for worn or bent bolts at the wing
attach points and wing struts. There can be a lot of damage not visible
unless you really check for it.
What do you know about this guy that know all this about aircraft. Is he an
engineer? Is he a test pilot? Does he know what that you are out doing
aerobatics in a C172 because of what he said.
Got your license in 43 hours. Only missed 1 on the written. If you are
really doing rolls and loops in a C172 it might not be long before you loose
the license.

Ken:
Thanks for your concern, but I don't know what these "bulkheads and stringers"
are. Yes, I looked at the wing strut. It was fine. What is an "inspection
plate"? How is that important to performing a loop or roll? The planes on
espn2 do it all the time. over and over and over.
I KNOW how to examine an airplane. My instructor was VERY good and even used to
fly for a major airline. He knows how to teach.
This "guy at the airport" has over 400 hours and knows a lot about different planes.
No, he does not know that I have tried to loop the plane, but I'll ask
him. Maybe he knows how. Maybe a 182 with more power would be more successful.

Push it all you like. In your own airplane. Over your own land. Alone. With
a large insurance policy naming me as beneficiary. Soon.
Preferably prior to any more trivial childish posts on USENET

Look at his email address. Also his name doesn't show up in the FAA registry.

I would suggest you contact your local FSDO and ask them. I'm sure they
