We had two Cessna T41 "Mescalaro"s in our Utah Wing Civil Air
Patrol, which are similar to the Reims Rocket. These were
obtained surplus from the USAF. They had the Continental O360
and CS prop. They also had lifting rings, and hard points under
the wings for ordinance. The USAF academy in Colorado had
dozens of T41s that they used as primary flight trainers up
until about 10 years ago.
The Service Manual for the K model 172 that I have lists the
Reims Rocket parts with footnotes. As I remember, the
prop/engine/cowling is where the bulk of the differences are.
I flew both of the T41s a few times. The higher power and CS
prop made the airplane better for our mountains than a standard
172, but was still nothing to jump up and down about. I have
thousands of hours in various normally aspirated and
turbocharged 182s, so the 172/T41 seemed somewhat anemic...
I know the fellow who bought one of the T41s from the CAP. If
you write me privately, I can give you his email address.
