Subject: | Cracked Flap Bellcrank Support - C-177RG |
Situation: On annual the A&P discovered a crack in the flap bellcrank support member
in the right wing. I think only the support is cracked and the ribs adjacent
to the support are OK
I am told the support structure is between two wing ribs about 3 to 4 ft outboard
on the right wing. I have asked for pictures but haven't gotten any. Aircraft
is in CA at a shop. We are in S. NV so personally taking a look hasn't been
possible - yet.
The structure may have cracked due to excessive tension in the flap cable or as
a result of flap extension overspeed. Either of these causes raise nominal concern
over the other wing. The inspection of the other wing did not reveal a problem.
But, it is cause for worry in the future.
Initially it was thought that the support member could be repaired with a Cessna
kit that would widen the inspection hole. Now we are being told that the kit
is inadequate. Further, we are told the wing must be removed and put in a jig
to preserve the 3 (I think) twist in camber during the repair process.
The repair process will include wing skin delamination on the bottom side to get
at the problem. Rib(s) may need to be sent to Cessna for fabrication. It is
possible doubler(s) can be used in lieu of new fabrication.
Guesstimate of abut 100 hrs to fix not including wing removal and reattachment.
Anybody out there have any experience with this problem? Any good advise for us?
What questions should we be asking? ETC?
Please REPLY TOO ALL if you post an answer so my partner gets the info. I'll be
at EAA Mon - Wed next week. Cell phone 702 461-1998
