--> Commander-List message posted by: "John D Williams" <keyscrusing@earthlink.net> Guys, I'm not a very religious person but my prayers go out this evening to the families of the crew of Columbia. I think we Americans tend to take a very casual to almost arrogant disinterest in our space program. We tend to think of it as a "quick trip around the block" and very routine. I think our successes have jaded us and we have forgotten just how dangerous space exploration and even aviation can truly be. No matter what our degree of technical prowess things can always go wrong and unlike the family sedan, mechanical failure in aircraft or spacecraft can have catastrophic results. These very brave people will all be missed. Please, don't let them become forgotten. They all deserve to be remembered! Subject: Re: Columbia
--> Commander-List message posted by: "Nico van Niekerk" <nico@cybersuperstore.com> Sorry about the content not being topical to this list, but it is important that I respond to the request. Folks, I am glad you asked what I meant and where I stand. I noticed on the wire that Iraq already claimed that God has had his revenge on the US because of its so-called aggression against Iraq. It did not take them long to come up with such utter nonsense. So, let me explain what I meant: Sandbox-dwellers: The Arabs would have nothing more than a sandbox to play in if we were not buying their oil and protecting them from their aggressors. If we don't do that we would have to support them by sending taxpayer money over there as welfare. They would die like flies having nothing more than camel dung to smoke. Bush - Texas: It is no secret that it is not only the Arabs that hate pres. Bush, but many Americans, some who were elected into high offices also would hand this country over to a madman rather than admit Bush is getting to become one of the greatest statesmen of all time. Now the Columbia is scattered over Texas. Not the ocean or California, but Texas - Bush country. Surely, (in their twisted minds) that has to be a sign from above, no? America - Israeli: America is accused of warring against the Muslim world because of Israel. The rhetoric goes: If only the US would not protect Israel to the extent it does, there would be peace in the Middle East, which is nothing but a trap. There will never be peace in the ME unless one party is subjected to the other by force. It is a reality and appeasement and negotiations will fail by radical hands every time it's tried. So, today the Columbia carried the scattered remains of an Israeli hero, who bombed an Iraqi nuclear power plant in the '80s, over ... where? Not the ocean, not California, but over Texas. Bush country. That has to be a sign... (They think). So these sand rats would claim this terrible tragedy as their victory, which is absurd. Where I stand: I am a new American and have lived in places where freedom was limited, where doing that which you believe in was punishable by imprisonment or even death. This past week an American told me that he was looking for another country to live in and I responded by saying to him the following: This (the US) is the only country on the face of the planet today in which you as an individual can still make a difference and fight liberalism (read: communism). And don't believe for a minute you would have even a fraction of the rights and privileges in any other place (read: literally any other place) in the world that you enjoy right here. Those things that chaff, you can fix them. That is where I stand. You will find no greater patriot than this author. Freedom was lost, but now I have found it here in the US, and I will not let go of it even if my life depended on it, because I know it is nowhere else to be found. Not everything is perfect over here, but then neither is it elsewhere. The magic is in the ability to fix it. Nico PS. If this is not yet clear, let me know. I can go on and on and on...... and on..... and on. ----- Original Message ----- From: "J.R.
