I bought N5462Z a straight 560 serial number 211 which has already been picked
through and had the wings drilled off, but I was still able to find a bunch
of goodies in her. I am keeping some of the stuff for a project that I am working
on, but most of it is going to go up on ebay along with a few others things
from my parts room(aka garage). Feel free to bid high :) If you have any
questions ask by email and I will get back to you as soon as I can, but I will
be traveling throughout the week so it may not be right away.
Also does anybody want 560 landing gear, wheel wells or cowlings? I am interested
in selling these pieces. Or even the whole wing, the only catch is you must
pick it up near Dallas if you want the whole thing.
Chris

Bow is, of course, right. The 500A has two-blade props, although those modified
to Colemill 'Super 300', had three-blade props.
Anyone know the full 'N' number of the Commander used to illustrate the Model
500A. Seems to end in '2X', but what's the rest?
Very Best Regards,
Barry C

| The picture of the 500A should have 2 blade props, I think.

Shure do, Phil.
My take on the 680V is that it's a toss between a 680FLP and a 680 V.
Here's why: The Achilles heel on both airplanes is the 3000 psi hydraulic
(Skydrol) pressurization system.
Not that the pressurization system is so troublesome but the 3000 psi
hydraulic pumps are too rare to easily support. So, it's the hydraulic pumps
that are the critical link in that chain.
Next is performance. The 680 V with the original Garrett -43 or even -43BL
engines will give about the same performance as the Lycoming IGSO-540 piston
engine powered 680-FLP.
Both engines are not easily supported; in my opinion, there is one shop for
the Lycoming IGSO-540 (Central Cylinder in Omaha, NE) and one shop for the
Garrett -43 engine (Bob Hancock in TN)
The 680 V may cruise a bit faster, but I found them to be about 190-210 knots
in the mid-teens. An FLP is not far off. Fuel burn may be a bit less,
gallon-wise with the FLP, but turbine fuel can be bought cheaper, so it's not
a factor.
What you get with the 680V is reversible props for short field work. But, if
you are working high and hot, the power droop on the -43 engine is so steep
over 60 degrees OAT, that acceleration is lacking at high altitude airports
on a warm day.
Turbines are better engines, in my opinion, but keep in mind that the
starting bid on anything that breaks on a turbine is $8,000. (or so it
seems)
The Garretts also need to be rigged correclty or they'll be a mess to handle
on take-off and landing. You'd think rigging one of these would be easily
done, but it's either very loose science or very tight magic and only a very
few guys can rig a -43 ... even the Garrett engine shop employees, since few
of them have worked on a pre-Century engine.
I've flown a poorly rigged 680-V (and 680-T) and it's terrifying.
Other than that, Mrs. Lincoln, how did you like the play?
I don't know where you're based and where you intend to operate. A 680V
could be just fine ...
Please take a look at this website and ask some questions of Bob Hancock as
part of your due diligence.

Where are you located, Jody? Is the pre-buy to be done at your place or
where 411VV is located?
You'll want someone who knows Commanders.
My nominations are:
Morris Kernick in the Bay Area of California. He travels. 321-403-8813
Commander-Aero in the Dayton, Ohio, area. <A HREF="http://www.commander-aero.com/">Welcome

Our own Fearless Leader, Capt. JimBob. North West, but I bet he'd travel.

Good news for the fleet!
Rob Davids has renewed his Twin Commander Designated Pilot Examiner status
and can give multi-engine, commercial and I believe instrument ratings in the
Twin Commanders.
Rob is located in the foothills of the Sierra, just outside of the
Sacramento/Stocton area and can given check rides in the northern California
district.
Rob used to fly a 500-A, converted to a Colemill, and used to fly a 680V as
well.
His day job is flying for United Airlines but his passion is float planes
(he's a float plane examiner), owns a beautiful Cessna 195, and of course, is
a Commander guy.
Rob is also going to be available for Commander-specific flight training and
with his United privileges, can travel to other locations for instruction at
little cost.
Whether he can give check rides out of his district will depend on YOUR local
FSDO.
I sent up a few candidates to Rob for multi-engine ratings in Commanders and
they all enjoyed the check ride process and came away having learned
something.

Hello Everyone,
I thought I'd pipe up here and offer an additional Vote of Confidence for
Rob Davids. He was the examiner I chose when getting my instrument rating in
my Commander 500-B. He is one of the *very few* instructors/examiners I've
met who have a solid understanding of the Aero Commander design. On top of
that, he reeks of competence and is an all-around firm-yet-fair guy. In
fact, he went to bat for me when the FAA guy who accompanied us disagreed
with a few of his points during the checkride (that's another story
altogether; my advice: when they ask you, "do you mind if this FAA guy comes
along on your checkride?", answer YES, I MIND!) I plan on taking his
Seaplane course soon, so I'm prepared when I win the lottery and can buy
that Grumman Goose I've always wanted ;-).
All in all, folks, there's too few people who know & love the Aero
Commanders, and we need to protect every resource. Bring your business to
Rob if you need a rating, and heck, get a seaplane rating while you're at
it. In fact, I'm pretty sure he owns the ONLY Piper Apache on floats, so you
can get your ME Seaplane rating too!
/J
PS: Oh yeah, that other thing.....I had a nosegear collapse in N353CC today,
like a stoopid rookie. I was flying over to Morris' new place in Stockton to
get a minor (haha) hydraulic leak fixed, and *poof*, 10NM out, aaaaalll my
hydraulic pressure goes away. This was the perfect time for my
pilot-sub-conscious to point out that the aux hyd. pump (I at least pulled
the breaker on takeoff) won't work the gear, so of course the mains lock but
not the nosegear. Anyway, I put 'er down on the numbers and rolled in a
tidge of power to keep the nosewheel off for the next 7,000 feet. Then I
kicked some rudder and turned onto the last taxiway, still with the nose up,
and backed off the power until the nose gently came down....whereupon the
nosegear collapsed and I scrubbed the edge of my right nosegear door & my
DME antenna off in about 25' of pavement. Morris was 50-50 cruel & kind: he
said, "you did a damn fine job, for a guy who knew he had a hyd. leak and
still put the gear up on the way here."
In the end, nothing damaged but 1 gear door, my wallet, and my pride, which
was completely crushed under that failed nosegear.
