John,
I think you did an outstanding job. Your nose gear bungee spring is the one
who should feel embarrassed.

That's a pretty sweet little 520. They've done a LOT of work -
especially the time-consuming mechanical stuff that would cost so much
that most folks just don't do it. I've given serious thought to buying
that airplane myself. Crunk did an absolutely beautiful instrument
panel for it.

I am hesitant to post this(for fear the feds will get ahold of it), but feel it
is a good time to say it. In my recent search for a decent nosewheel bungee
I went through 4 airplanes that had been retired looking for a decent bungee.
I found in every case that the shaft of the spring was very worn causing the
spring to have a very bent shape and the bushing in one end was without fail extremely
worn. In two cases the bolt had worn through the bushing entirely and
was wearing away at the surrounding metal of the bungee body.
I should state that the planes I looked at were of the 560A vintage, but it is
the same design through out all of the commanders. With out disassembly it is
impossible to spot the problem. Besides seeing if the gear will come down without
hydraulic pressure. It might be worth asking your mechanic the next time
the plane is in for an annual to remove the nosewheel spring and inspect it.
When putting the system back together there is also an adjustment that should
be made to make sure that the bungee is putting the proper amound of pressure
on the system. These old springs lose there elasticty over time and need to
be adjusted. It is not a fun job, I spent most of the day yesterday putting
things back together just right on the 560A I am working on.

Hi John,
I saw earlier today that N353CC had been dinged at Stockton yesterday
But, glad to see there wasn't too much damage, and more importantly, the driver
was OK

| Hello Everyone,
|
| PS: Oh yeah, that other thing.....I had a nosegear collapse in N353CC today,
| like a stoopid rookie. I was flying over to Morris' new place in Stockton to
| get a minor (haha) hydraulic leak fixed, and *poof*, 10NM out, aaaaalll my
| hydraulic pressure goes away. This was the perfect time for my
| pilot-sub-conscious to point out that the aux hyd. pump (I at least pulled
| the breaker on takeoff) won't work the gear, so of course the mains lock but
| not the nosegear. Anyway, I put 'er down on the numbers and rolled in a
| tidge of power to keep the nosewheel off for the next 7,000 feet. Then I
| kicked some rudder and turned onto the last taxiway, still with the nose up,
| and backed off the power until the nose gently came down....whereupon the
| nosegear collapsed and I scrubbed the edge of my right nosegear door & my
| DME antenna off in about 25' of pavement. Morris was 50-50 cruel & kind: he
| said, "you did a damn fine job, for a guy who knew he had a hyd. leak and
| still put the gear up on the way here."
|
| In the end, nothing damaged but 1 gear door, my wallet, and my pride, which
| was completely crushed under that failed nosegear.

A quick question to help the FlightSim guys.
On a Model 520 panel, there's a pull knob which appears to be labelled "Alt
Air".
Can anyone describe its function?
Thanks!

Thanks Sir Barry!
Yes, it could have been worse. All in all, very minor damage...I should be
flying again in about a week. You can be sure from now on that I'll check my
nosegear spring/bungee during the annual inspection!

Closes a flapper valve in the front of the airbox. This closes off the
air from the scoop into the filter and causes a spring-loaded flapper at
the rear of the airbox to be pulled open. Warm air from an exhaust cuff
is then supplied (unfiltered) to the engine.

Phil,
Wing Commander Gordon did mention the 680FLP with a Mr. RPM conversion.
Most of them have had the modification to the 1000psi hydraulic system and
bleed air pressurization.
Dick MacCoon has the intercooler designed. All we need is a customer that
wants it and we can add the intercooler.
There is a 680FLP and 680FP (short body) on the market with the Mr. RPM
conversions.

Shure do, Phil.
My take on the 680V is that it's a toss between a 680FLP and a 680 V.
Here's why: The Achilles heel on both airplanes is the 3000 psi hydraulic
(Skydrol) pressurization system.

Ricardo,
I finished the Jet A1 fuel farm on Oct 31. They have lots of Jet A1, but no
AVGAS at all.
Curacao and Aruba both have AVGAS.
There was a lot of talk about adding AVGAS to Bonaire, but nothing had been
decided by the time I left the Island.

I don't know for sure on the 520 but in general the principle of Alt Air is
a secondary source for static air for the pitot-static system in the event
the primary static ports have frozen up.

Ricardo,
I've been thinking of you and hope the current situation in Venezuela isn't
impacting you too much.
Sounds like you're still flying, so that's good.
I'm sure all on this list hope for your continued enjoyment of your Commander
... and plentiful AvGas soon!

I beleive you will find that it's two knobs, for alternate induction air,

If only I could be so elequent, (did I spell that right?) While setting the
world straight.
Paul Reason (I wish I had written this!!)
"DO NOT FORGET"
I sat in a movie theater watching "Schindler's List," asked myself, "Why
didn't the Jews fight back?"
Now I know why.
I sat in a movie theater, watching "Pearl Harbor" and asked myself, "Why
weren't we prepared?"
Now I know why.
Civilized people cannot fathom, much less predict, the actions of evil
people.
On September 11, dozens of capable airplane passengers allowed themselves to
be overpowered by a handful of poorly armed terrorists because they did not
comprehend the depth of hatred that motivated their captors.
On September 11, thousands of innocent people were murdered because too many
Americans naively reject the reality that some nations are dedicated to the
dominance of others. Many political pundits, pacifists and media personnel
want us to forget the carnage. They say we must focus on the bravery of the
rescuers and ignore the cowardice of the killers. They implore us to
understand the motivation of the perpetrators. Major television stations have
announced they will assist the healing process by not replaying devastating
footage of the planes crashing into the Twin Towers.
I will not be manipulated.
I will not pretend to understand.
I will not forget.
I will not forget the liberal media who abused freedom of the press to kick
our country when it was vulnerable and hurting.
I will not forget that CBS anchor Dan Rather preceded President Bush's
address to the nation with the snide remark, "No matter how you feel about
him, he is still our president."
I will not forget that ABC TV anchor Peter Jennings questioned President
Bush's motives saying,=A0 "We're all pretty skeptical and cynical about
Washington."
And I will not forget that ABC's Mark Halperin warned if reporters weren't
informed of every little detail of this war, they aren't "likely -- nor
should they be expected -- to show deference."
I will not isolate myself from my fellow Americans by pretending an attack on
the USS Cole in Yemen was not an attack on the United States of America.
I will not forget the Clinton administration equipped Islamic terrorists and
their supporters with the world's most sophisticated telecommunications
equipment and encryption technology, thereby compromising America's ability
to trace terrorist radio, cell phone, land lines, faxes and modem
communications.
I will not be appeased with pointless, quick retaliatory strikes like those
perfected by the previous administration.
I will not be comforted by "feel-good, do nothing" regulations like the silly
"Have your bags been under your control?" question at the airport.
I will not be influenced by so called,"antiwar demonstrators" who exploit the
right of expression to chant anti-American obscenities.
I will not forget the moral victory handed the North Vietnamese by American
war protesters who reviled and spat upon the returning Soldiers, Airmen,
Sailors and Marines.
I will not be softened by the wishful thinking of pacifists who chose
reassurance over reality.
I will embrace the wise words of Prime Minister Tony Blair who told Labor
Party conference, "They have no moral inhibition on the slaughter of the
innocent. If they could have murdered not 3,000 but 300,000, does anyone
doubt they would have done so and rejoiced in it?
There is no compromise possible with such people, no meeting of minds, no
point of understanding with such terror. Just a choice: defeat it or be
defeated by it. And defeat it we must!"
I will force myself to:
-hear the weeping
-feel the helplessness
-imagine the terror
-sense the panic
-smell the burning flesh
- experience the loss
- remember the hatred.
I sat in a movie theater, watching "Private Ryan" and asked myself, "Where
did they find the courage?"
Now I know.
We have no choice. Living without liberty is not living.
