Subject: | IGSO 540 B1A QUESTION |
--> Commander-List message posted by: MOEMILLS@aol.com
Fellow Commander drivers,
If the sheet metal plate which is brazed onto the rocker covers comes loose
and the intake rocker shaft comes out of its' stanchions the intake valve will
no longer open. Obviously, that cylinder will not fire and the engine will
run extremely rough as that cylinder is also getting two compression strokes in
the four cycles.
My questions is this: Should the engine go extremely rich with black smoke
blowing out of the exhaust. This has happened to me two times. After having
worked in the racing engine industry for 37 years I have a relatively good
understanding of engines and I can't understand why the engine goes dead rich (even
with the Simmonds pump). Also, the manifold pressure goes low which is
understandable because the engine is so rich.
Any help that anyone could give me in understanding this phenomenon would be
greatly appreciated.

The Simmonds Fuel Control is Controlled by Oil Pressure, Has a little oil
screen that has to be checked often. CloudCraft can tell us all, exactly how
it works, Where are you Kieth?
Are you coming to the Flyin?

Thanks, however, am familiar with the full rich condition when the oil
pressure goes down, however, in this situation as soon as the intake rocker shaft
is
replaced and the intake valve opens properly again the fuel mixture goes back
to normal.

Moe,
This is a W.A.G., but since the IGSO-540 is a single point injection at the
supercharger and in your scenario, one cylinder is not completing an intake
stroke, it may be that an extra rich mixture is forming in the manifold.
This mixture -- richer by "one cylinder's worth" is what could be causing the
fogging and MAP drop.
What happens if you manually lean at idle? Does it clean up?
Really -- I've never come across this before -- a rich mixture NOT caused by
an oil pressure problem and/or Simmonds problem.
Captain Spray: Right now looks like I'll be working over that weekend of the
Fly-In. We've hired a new copilot which would normally mean more free time
for me, but he's fresh out of training and the All Mighty Chief Pilot as put me
with him on all the up comming trips so I can give him his I.O.E.
That's what I get for being the company I.O.E. guy. No rest for the wicked.
My regrets to all; I would have enjoyed meeting some of the new members,
seeing old members and my dear friends at Commander-Aero.
Wing Commander Gordon.

Wing Commander Gordon:
Thank you for your valued advice. My thought was that the cylinder with the
inoperable intake valve also was not using the boost from the mechanically
driven supercharger, therefore, the air/fuel mixture should remain approximately
the same.
Best regards,
Moe
