Barry,
Interesting question! My 520 only had one tab and I don't think it ever had
an auto-pilot installed. (At least I never found the remnants of one. It
will nice to discover the answer.
Trust you are doing well in 'Jolly Old".
It appears monetary considerations are going to preclude my attendance at
the Fly-In this year. Seems I'll be getting my check ride and recurrent
training on those dates, so tip a few for me.

Hi Guys,
Thanks to all for the replies.
The question arose because it seems that the early Aero Design & Engineering
Company Model 520 had electric trim systems, using Army surplus actuators, but
only had enough for the first 18 aircraft, with a few held back for spares.
However, it seems that the 18 they used may not necessarily have been on the
first 18 built! All the others went to a new-design system with trim tabs on
both elevators.
The figure of 18 has been quoted after many mists of time have descended and
could possibly have been 20 or 21.
Three Models 520 were supplied to the U.S. Army, s/ns 17, 21 & 23. But, s/n 21
does not seem to have a trim tab on the right-hand elevator, so I doubt if the
other two did. At least, it doesn't appear to have one now.
Chris - yours was s/n 93, so should have had the tabs on each elevator when
built.
Crunk - yours was s/n 39, so should also have had the same tabs. Of course, much
could have happened to the metal work over 50 years, but it is intriguing that
you say it only had the one tab!
A can of worms, or a barrel of snakes?
So, if anyone stumbles across an old 520, PLEASE, check the tabs! All reports
gratefully received.
I think there are a few 520 owners subscribed to this list, so if can report
back, I'll be grateful.
Looking forward to seeing a whole bunch of old friends at the Fly-In!
Kindest Regards,
Barry C.

Subject: | Any Mechanic Recommendations? |
--> Commander-List message posted by: "Brock Lorber - VegasFC" <blorber@vegasfc.com>
Wanted:
Aircraft mechanic for AC 680 FL(P) with Mr RPM conversion. Must realize
that quick pay/sure pay is a good, rare customer that must be treasured.
Must realize that badmouthing the mechanic before is ironic unless he can
fix the problem himself. Must be willing to admit when he's over his head
(extra points for consulting the maintenance manual once in a while). Must
make a committment to finish any job tackled (including the paperwork).
Must return the aircraft in at least as good of shape as you received it.
Underpromising and overdelivering highly desired.
- No training pay provided. If you don't know the airframe and engines,
maybe YOU can pay for your schooling like I have.
- Parts swappers need not apply. I can guess; applicant must have
troubleshooting skills.
- If you don't want the job, or don't have time, or have more projects than
you could ever possibly complete, please do not apply.
- Must pass basic communications test that includes answering the phone,
and returning messages (completion standard: +/- 48 hours from when you
said you'd call).
If anyone knows someone that could pass the requirements above (regardless
of location) please let me know. If you can't guess, I've had it with one
more shop!
Thanks,
Brock Lorber

Let's see:
Round-trip, last minute ticket: $700
Hotel: $80/night
Per Diem: ~ $50/day
Tools: $0 (if I don't have them, they don't exist)
Shop Rate: wash
Parts: wash
Fuel to get to my hangar: $0 (vs. $500 to get to my most recent mechanic)
So, labor + parts + $830 to $960 and job gets done right, or labor + parts
+ $630 to $760 and job doesn't get done. No, I don't think Orlando is too
far away if the guy fits the job description!

Brock,
I tried to call the phone number you gave me when you were shopping for
N400CH and it's not in service. Give me a call. home: 702-307-8208, cell:
702-496-9112 (and no heavy breathing at 03:00 you guys). Am going to be flying
for
the next 6 days but we'll discuss the unique nature of maintenance on a Mr RPM
FLP.
