Hi JimBob & CommanderLand,
Yep, those Swearingen gear doors are kinda rare!
I've found only one 560A(HC) and ten 680's with that mod. under STC SA2-851.
But, only one of these candidates has been converted to a 680E. And, it's
registered in Jim's backyard in Washington.
Therefore, I'll risk sticking my neck out and guess that it's N6863S, s/n 380
(formerly 680-380-63), built in August 1956.
Do I get a box of cigars, or some make-up to disguise the red face?
Best Regards,
Barry

JB and Barry,
What was the conversion from a 680S to 680E?
The factory E has the longer wing, newer panel, and ?
Was the engine changed?
What is special about the Swearingen gear doors?
Do you have any photos that you can send to Nico to post?
Lots of dumb questions.

Hi Tylor,
As far as I thought, the conversion was 'simply' the extended wing, but the
engines were probably changed from GSO-480-A1A6 to -B1A6 as well, if not already
having been changed. Some were converted under Commander Engineering Report No.
G10-163. I think I have a copy of that Report somewhere, but it hasn't fallen
easily to hand. Others quoted Drawing Numbers 5200013 and 5200018.
But Bill McGinnis, in helping us put together a 'Fact File' on the Model 680E,
says:
"Since there was also a gross weight change involved here, there were a number
of loose ends that needed modification as well, other than wing extensions, to
arrive at a Model 680E (such as instrument markings, control surface deflection
changes, flight manual revision, etc). These can all be found by researching and
comparing all of the sub-drawings listed on the Model 680 and 680E top drawings
( 6100009 and 6100014 respectively). To avoid this kind of drudgery it was
usually the practice to create a 'top mod drawing' or report which was specific
as to what required adding, deleting or modification, hence Engineering Report
No. G10-163."
The Swearingen gear doors were two long, quite narrow doors that, when closed,
covered the MLG leg 'hole' in the underside of the nacelle.
I do have a few photos that show the doors, but most of them are not too clear.
However, there is one color shot of N6877S, 680-462-132, taken at Chino,
California that I'll scan and send to Nico.
Very Best Regards,
Barry

All the notes from listers and members regarding the Commander Fly-in got me
reminiscing, and so I've been working on trying to explain my fondness for
Commanders ever since.
Commanders were instrumental in my love of flying and my former career.
I hope I've been able to convey that in my little missive about why I like
Commanders:
