I have a couple of 500B questions.
Has anyone seen TAS vs power settings for a 1960 500B? The manual is pretty skimpy.
The fuel valve switch is a three position switch with top as "open", neutral and
down labeled closed. I have been instructed to leave the switch at neutral
all the time. Any thoughts?
Any tidbits that are not in the manual that are good to know?

Has anyone noticed that there are THREE Commanders listed on eBay right now? A
520, 560-A and a 680.
There are also two ad items for sale. The IDs are:
4585815499
4585815871
None of this is mine nor do I have an interest in any of these. I just thought
it was unusual for three Commanders to be for sale at the same time.
Ben

I've been watching those as well Ben.
That pretty 560 used to belong to Milt Concannon. I'd guess the current
owner has over $200,000 invested in that bird based on what I know.
Pretty sad that it looks like it's going to sell for under $20k.
Dunno if you saw the "questions" about the 680. There was a person
asking if he could fly it from the east coast to Ca on one engine so it
would be "ekonomical" (guess he figured that since one motor was shot
that he could then afford to fly it???)
I've seen that 520 but I can't quite put my finger on the details. Sure
would be nice to see each of those airplanes find a caring new owner who
had the ability to restore them, but I bet they all end up at the scrap
yard within the year :-(

The guillotine valves should be left open. They are firewall shutoff valves
in case of fire, etc.. Some folks use them to shut down the engines. I leave
them open.

Not necessarily.
They should not be used for engine shut down, but many operators do turn the
fuel valves OFF after shut down just in case there is seepage in engine fuel
control components.
(Remember, there is head pressure if the wings are topped off, as they should
be for long storage times, to prolong fuel bladder life)
The three positions are closed, neutral and open -- but power to the valve is
supposed to be momentary to open or close the valve, as sensed by position or
limit switches.
The neutral position means no power to the valve. Lots of pilots like to
have appliances unpowered when not in use, in case of failed limit switches, etc.
One smallish advantage to leaving the fuel switches in neutral, after cycling
the fuel valve OFF, is that a thief unfamiliar with Commanders will not get
the engines to run more than a few seconds.
I don't know if any Commander thefts have really be thwarted by this, but my
theory is that anyone stealing an airplane should have to earn of much of it
as possible.
As far as performance goes, I don't have any charts around and probably never
did. I've found that at DENALTs of 8000 to 10,000, the average 500B has a
hull speed of 165 knots (TAS) at 62-65% power.
Push the power and fuel flows up and you'll get 175 to 178 Knots.

Life is not simple anywhere. Probably less so elsewhere.

Hello, Gordon
Good to hear from you. What do you think [or know] the shrike kit does for
cruise?
Full throttle, LOP at about 12,000 feet? And winglets, if they matter in
cruise at that altitude. We also have the Q tip props. Stock IO540's....we'll
report back to you with observed performance in another couple of weeks, God
willing.....and the money pump keeps working.....
Thanks, Rob

I leave them open, but return the switches to the neutral position so that
there is no current to the servos.

Hi, John
The limit switches cut the power when the servo reaches the desired
position....
we could start with a bunch of "what ifs", but that would end with"If we
never fly, we won't have any problems in the air".....

The 520 is N2627B, sn139. Does anyone know this one?
