Rob, you're so right. As an example, I was trained to leave them open and
never close them unless I was on fire, because "what if you were at a remote
strip, and a servo failed on actuation while the valve was closed? Then
you'd be stuck there!"
I guess you could "what if" yourself right out of flying if you weren't
careful.
Although with all the training I've had, I was unaware that those fuel
valves had limit switches. That's why I love this list.....500+ hours & 5
years down the line, and I still learn something new about these marvelous
airplanes on a regular basis.
Cheers,
/J

Hi, John
I still pinch myself everytime I get to fly one of these twin Commanders. Got
a lot of pinch marks in 30 years!
We just aquired a clean 500B with shrike mods and altho' I've run and
taxi'ed her, the first flight will be in the next couple of weeks, after we do
a few
minor things to assure her airworthiness. She needs to be in the air and so
do I!

Katrina got N2774B and it was a good running 560A, in annual. Very sad. My
partner and I made a good cash offer on her and the owner[non aviator] turned us
down. I don't believe it was insured. The airframe was in excellent

This comes under the heading of, "What if we get hit by a meteor while in
flight" but I just have to toss this out.
On Ted Smith designed airplanes (Aero Commanders, Aero Stars and even up into
the Westwind) there are "Quiet Checks" that I like to run before starting an
engine. This includes - depending on model -- fuel shut-offs, fuel selectors
and electric hydraulic pumps.
To take the Chicken Little theory one maybe-not-so-absurd step further,
>>As an example, I was trained to leave them open and
> never close them unless I was on fire, because "what if you were at a remote
> strip, and a servo failed on actuation while the valve was closed? Then

What if you had an in-flight fire and the valve had failed? Then you'd be
stuck there.
I totally agree that one can test an airplane to death and create more
maintenance problems than should exist by repeatedly testing things that are fine
... but some components I want to fail on the ground ... and they'll probably
fail in the air after passing the preflight test.
We tend to operate and pass on ideas based on personal fears and/or
experiences so I think anyone's techniques and procedures are valid. I'm just
offering
up mine.
(No, I've never had a Commander catch on fire and I've never had a fuel
shut-off valve or selector valve fail, so go figure why I do what I do!)

Barry,
had a little spare time today and decided to go check on a Commander
that I last saw 10+ years ago.
N2657B is still owned by Jerry Springer and is still located at "Airmen
Acres" just north of Tulsa, OK.
The last time I saw that airplane, it was a beautiful bird with a new
custom panel, excellent interior and paint, and new engines From what
I've heard, it hasn't flown since the last time I saw it. It is now
faded, covered in bird droppings, and slowly rotting away. It was
grounded due to the prop AD, the props removed, and it's not moved
since. Owner refuses any discussion about selling it, so it's just
sitting there. Sad....

Folks,
If any of you have ever tried to troubleshoot a wiring problem on a
Commander you already know that the manuals don't have much schematic
information at all. Each bird came with a unique "as-built" book with
it's wiring diagrams and they've all been lost over the years.
I have a complete factory set of schematics and diagrams specific to
520-106. The cover letter is from Aero Design to Texas-Illinois Natural
Gas Pipe Line Co.
Dunno if 106 is still even flying, but this would be a valuable piece of
documentation for any early Commander owner. Overall condition is very
good although the paper is beginning to brown and the print has faded a
bit. Someone should probably get this scanned and archived as nobody
has wiring diagrams for early Commanders.
If you want this book, email me off-list. I'd like to see the
information in it saved somehow - ideally, scanned and hosted on a web site.

has wiring diagrams for early Commanders.
If you want this book, email me off-list. I'd like to see the
information in it saved somehow - ideally, scanned and hosted on a web site.

Phil,
I talked to Mike Barber, the owner. He is a 150HR pilot, no instrument, no
multi engine. That lives in Farmington, NM and the airplane is in the
Houston area.
He has found out that he is in a little over his head.
The airplane was not running when he bought it last year. He has fixed the
props, rebuild the carbs, new magnetos and harnesses. He has a core engine
and some parts including jack stands. He does have all logs books and some
manuals.
Needs tires, needs "some assembly" to fly. Very bad paint. Needs rudder
tube. It would take a good pre-buy by someone who knows Aero Commanders.
It sounded like the Mechanics that he had working on it did not know
Commanders.
Looks like a good start to get it back flying. Last Annual was 1994 and
flew until 1998.
It would take someone like JB or Chris Wall to go there and put it together,
get the ferry permit and move to where the annual could be completed.
Chris S, do you want another 520 to take apart and put together again?
Chris Wall, are you still in Houston area?
Tylor Hall
The 520 is N2627B, sn139. Does anyone know this one?
