I felt a bit of excitement because during the annual it was noticed that the emergency gear pressure gauge had been frozen in position, the gauge was removed diddled with and returned to service. Gear descended and locked only after speed was reduced. Found more cracked clevi during gear rebuild this year. Also, some retention pins had cocked in the gear and scored the hell out of the inner wall of strut cylinders. They are available, but you can buy an airplane for the price of them. (There is a shop rebuilding them.) Found the tiniest of leaks in the nitrogen system lines that would take a couple weeks to leak down, but was a pain in the ass. The guys used freon and a sniffer. Man is that thing sensitive. Our nitrogen pressure gauge stuck before and after a rebuild of the gauge. Standard preflight includes a sharp tap on the thing to get it to return to where it belongs. I suppose I'd miss having to tap it if it ever works right again. Because the gear stopped at 1/4 travel my immediate thought was that the gauge was still inop and that I may not have any nitrogen pressure to push them down. I was still moving along fairly fast (160 MPH) so I slowed it down to about 110 MPH which finally lit up three beautiful green lights. Had a hydrolic line shear off in the wheel well just after take-off in a 500B.  Emergency checklist slow her down and whala...another thanks to Ted on a superb design.

Indeed a testimony to a well thought out design.

I had the same experience when I lost total hydraulics once. Lowering the speed makes the gear pop smartly into place. Thanks, Ted!

I had a near one of these after my 2.5 hour engine break-in flight, a hydraulic line failed in flight and when selected the gear went 1/4 of the way down and stayed there.  I felt a bit of excitement because during the annual it was noticed that the emergency gear pressure gauge had been frozen in position, the gauge was removed diddled with and returned to service.
