I would like to see a method to test the movement of the gauge
during the walk around to insure it is not "stuck" in place.

Indeed a testimony to a well thought out design.
I had the same experience when I lost total hydraulics once.
Lowering the speed makes the gear pop smartly into place. Thanks, Ted!

I had a near one of these after my 2.5 hour engine break-in
flight, a hydraulic line failed in flight and when selected the gear
went 1/4 of the way down and stayed there. I felt a bit of excitement
because during the annual it was noticed that the emergency gear
pressure gauge had been frozen in position, the gauge was removed
diddled with and returned to service. Because the gear stopped at 1/4
travel my immediate thought was that the gauge was still inop and that I
may not have any nitrogen pressure to push them down. I was still
moving along fairly fast (160 MPH) so I slowed it down to about 110 MPH
which finally lit up three beautiful green lights.

I think the gauge should have a dump valve immediately before the gauge
just to dump what is in the gauge, in that way the needle would drop to
zero and then back up to current pressure. The amount of loss might
mean a quick top up every couple of months.

Same when one of our clevises (clevi?) broke and disconnected a
retract cylinder.. Gear descended and locked only after speed was
reduced.
Found more cracked clevi during gear rebuild this year. Also, some
retention pins had cocked in the gear and scored the hell out of the
inner wall of strut cylinders. They are available, but you can buy an
airplane for the price of them. (There is a shop rebuilding them.)
Found the tiniest of leaks in the nitrogen system lines that would
take a couple weeks to leak down, but was a pain in the ass. The guys
used freon and a sniffer. Man is that thing sensitive.
Our nitrogen pressure gauge stuck before and after a rebuild of the
gauge. Standard preflight includes a sharp tap on the thing to get it to
return to where it belongs. I suppose I'd miss having to tap it if it
ever works right again.

I have gotten a number of things from Harry, I sent him an Email and
left a message but no luck so far. I do owe him $110.00 but I'm pretty
sure that is not an issue with him.
I have now committed myself to a used cable for 50% the price of new
which I believe equates to $150.00 plus 1 hour of labour to pull it from
a 690A. I'm sure Harry could do better but too late now.

Ted would be impressed, Tom.
Your idea has a very important (if not hidden) benefit. The dump valve could
also reveal hydraulic fluid getting into the pneumatic system via a rupture
in either outboard landing gear actuator.
This would also mean that nitrogen under pressure could work its way into the
hydraulic side of a MLG actuator and hydrostatically lock it at worst, or
slow down its operation, at least.
Until someone comes up with a purge valve for the pneumatic guage, it's a
good idea to release some pressure via the Schraeder valve with a tissue held
over it to chek for traces of hydraulic fluid.

Well my father (long gone now) used to always say when I came up with
some idea "If it was a good idea, someone would have already thought of
it", pretty sad eh?
I believe that it is expected to have Skydrol vapour in the nitrogen
area because the O-rings specified for the nitrogen system are Skyrol
O-rings tolerant.

I'm not sure that's true, but I am not a mechanic, nor am I an O-ring. The
O-rings in the pneudraulic (outboard) actuators will have Skydrol on one side
of them, so they'll need to be Skydrol tolerant.
If there's Skydrol tolerant O-rings further downstream in the pneumatic
system, then, yes, there may be some fluid/condensation anticipated -- but beware
of the nitrogen bottle collecting fluid.
I think there's guys here who know way more about the subtleties of this than
I do ...
