Winds were ripping across the north-east past couple of days. Yesterday was rough, but we did see some pretty high ground speeds (only one-way though, never did understand why). We had a local job today, and winds were even higher than yesterday. I had to spiral up to altitude in a relatively still pocket out of the worst of it. Turning to the north-west the GPS showed a serious drop in ground speed. Big drop. I figured it might be fun to play a little and opened the cowl flaps and dropped out the flaps. The GPS dropped through 50kts, 40kts, 30kts as I kept pullling the nose up. I had always remembered my dad's goofy stories from old Zahns airport where he instructed, about flying cubs backwards. I had flown cubs slow, but never backwards. With the Commander held safely just above a gentle burble it dropped through the 20's and then I hunted a little bit with the nose to find the slowest sustained speed. We bottomed out at 15kts.... Never could get it to stop. Maybe next time. Man we had some heady numbers coming back home for a normally aspirated straight 500B at 7500. Happy holidays, Merry Christmas, Happy Hanukkah, Kwanza, New Years. Ok? That IS irresponsible. I was hoping you were going to tell us you were able to land on the top of a semi-truck rolling down the highway -- going the opposite direction. By the way, I don't believe there is a Santa Claus or a tail wind. Both are myths they tell little children.
