The $26,000 is what he would have paid as sales tax if he had bought the a/c in Maine. What they are saying is that they can levy use tax (sales tax) on *anyone* who flys an a/c into maine. I presume this is discriminatory, as I doubt they enfore the same policy on, say, cars. (That would be great for the tourist industry in maine if they charged each car owner $3-10k to cross the border. I am interested as to what it is about and how they figure out the tax bill. Anyone else know anything about this? MUST GA PILOTS STAY OUT OF MAINE? That's the question that Steve Kahn and dozens of other pilots are wondering about, after being hit by the state of Maine with tax bills in the thousands of dollars for flying into the state. Kahn, an investment advisor who lives in Boston, flies his Cirrus SR-22 frequently into Maine to visit a summer home and other destinations, and as a volunteer with Angel Flight. He's been doing that since 2003, but this year, he got a tax bill from the state of Maine saying he owes them a "use tax" that totals over $26,000 with interest. Kahn says he had no way of knowing that flying in Maine would trigger the tax until he got the bill. "It's so unreasonable and unfair," he says. Several years ago nearly every car at the race track or strip had eight pistons, eight spark plugs and on and on. Now most have only four. Over one half of our customers who once owned independent garages have bit the dust in the last 10 years. Since I am retiring next month I am not as concerned as I once was. The hybrids will be very high maintenance as they get older. They will require a different skill set than the average mechanic has today. Try doing a brake job on a car that uses alternators as a part of the braking system. Battery disposal will be challenging. In 1964 (my first year in the racing business) the death of the internal combustion engine was announced. Andy Granatelli had almost won Indy with the Novi and Chrysler was driving the turbines around and loaning them to people. Forty three years later........ My understanding is that GM called in the EV1 cars for much the same reasons that the Starship planes were purchased quietly and shredded. If you want to feel some good honest acceleration ride in a Pious that has the electrical (instant torque with a slider clutch installed)and gasoline engine both running at the same time (a minor modification) ...the hot rodding spirit is still alive.
