Good Morning All, Think of Bingo fuel this way. You are down at the lodge playing Bingo. What happens when somebody calls Bingo? Everyone else pushes back and waits to see what happens. It is not an emergency, but special consideration is given to he/she who calls Bingo! Same deal! Subject: answers to Qantas 747 Incident
Qantas Says 747 Incident May Lead To Fleetwide Changes Leaking Galley Drip Tray Leads To Loss Of Electrical Power Australia's Transport Safety Bureau and Civil Aviation Safety Authority, Boeing and Qantas are all involved in an investigation into an incident Monday, in which a Qantas 747 flying 344 passengers from London to Bangkok lost main electrical power during its descent. <http://www.aero-news.net/##> The Australian reports a cracked drip tray below the plane's first-class galley allowed water to drip into a generator control unit. Cabin lighting went out, but cockpit functions continued on battery power to allow pilots to make an otherwise routine landing. "It happened at 15,000ft, so already descending on approach, and I think the first thought was 'get the aeroplane down', which was quite right," said David Cox, Qantas executive general manager for engineering. "Had they been presented with the challenge with more time in the air, there are other things they could have tried. "It was just like tipping a glass of water into your stereo," Cox said of the incident. "It is not a good thing for that sort of equipment to have happen to it." The paper quoted unnamed aviation sources who said the battery backup system, which is supposed to guarantee 30 minutes of operation to critical systems, probably would have lasted more like an hour... but the situation would still have been grave if it happened when the plane was more than an hour from a suitable landing site. Cox told the paper he expects the incident to prompt an alert to other operators of the plane from Boeing, and possibly regulatory action. "At the moment, we're out inspecting the fleet and looking to see where that water may have come from, and what steps we need to take to stop that water getting in there again," he said. "Obviously correcting the drip tray is an immediate action but that's a relatively simple thing to do. The bigger concerns are around how the water got there, and how we protect the avionics better." ___________________________ Deneal Schilmeister, ATP LearJet St. Louis - Cincinnati 1997 SL500 http://deneals.com <http://deneals.com/>

Don- When I was based out of DC- we interacted with them quite a bit in the same airspace. The pilots are just as good a bunch as the rest of us once in the air. It's the admin Air Force types and the security admins you gotta watch out for. They are so worried about their jobs they don't bother to think in terms of real world consequences.... Take for example the ADIZ. Now *there* is a process that was invented by chair warmers and bears no resemblance to reality. Rob Rob; I totally agree, most pilots are pretty nice guys, often better when we take them out of their uniforms and we can all be just "Pilots", doing what we love to do. The ADIZ is the main reason I don't fly my Commander up to see 'Honey' in the Mt. Vernon area, just too much of a hassel in the DC area. And for what purpose? The media makes such a big deal out of it when someone violates the restricted area, but never a word is heard when it is the use of the pilot's 'emergency authority' such as weather and allows the pilot to violate any rules, but does require 3 letters within 72 hours. Course you may get shot at by some over jealous police or security force. Does make you wonder what ever happened to common sense. But that also is a two way street, can't imagine flying in the area without either radio contact or at least maintenaining a radio listening guard,. Don

I'll look into putting them on the Commander website and just link the shopping cart portion to my site. That way we can leverage the value of the website too. At the moment there are not enough folks that showed an interest in the Commander mugs, but I decided to go ahead and have a set made anyway. We'll keep them in inventory and they will sell in time. It's usually how it goes with these things. I am now working through designs for the mugs. When I have short-listed them, I'll share it with all to get some feed-back. Sure, Roland. Why don't you send me the graphics you want on them and I will quote you a price, if that's OK with you. The graphics matter because it involves the number of colors, which again affects the process. Subject: SWEED RALSTON
    From: yourtcfg@aol.com
HI KIDS. I had? nice afternoon. Flew triple 2 to Hillsboro (HIO) to attend a memorial for Swede Ralston.? Swede was the originator of Aero Air, one of the oldest and best Twin Commander service centers.? He had a wonderful and colorful career including a stint crop dusting in a Grumman TBM Avenger.? He was also a talented aerobatic pilot best know for flying an AT-6 through the blimp hangar at?Tillimook Oregon.? I had several great opportunities to spend time with Swede one on one over the years and I can attest to his wonderful, honest spirit.? During our very first (since I have been presiding) Flight group flyin, at Aero air, a great video was shown of Swede landing a 500S on a tiny, 700 foot strip on a sheer bluff in Idaho's "Hells Canyon".? A potential buyer told Swede that if he could land (and take off again) he would buy a brand new Shrike.? Well, Swede did it and true to his word the buyer wrote the check.? It is an amazing video.? This last summer, Sue and I took a jet boat ride through Hells Canyon and our guide stopped the boat below a bluff.? "see that goat trail up there" he said.? "Believe it or not that is an airstrip!!"? "It is called Cash Creek".? "Now, for the rest of the story" said our guide.? "I guy actually flew in there with a twin?motor job!!"? That was of course Swede Ralston.? Later, Swede took a Tubo Commander in there!!!? Swede will truly be missed.? I had a great, short flight.? Tripe 2 is running great and it really felt good to fly her again.? jb ________________________________________________________________________
