      All,

I have a "newbie" type of question.

What are the issues if I decide to put the airplane in "storage"? It is
coming up on annual in March and the spar AD is due in April. The
annual insurance is $4500 and is due in July.

If I find a hanger to store it in until the market strengthens or
someone has interest in purchasing it, would it be flyable for
demonstration if it is out of annual?

What could I expect to pay for inside storage on a monthly basis?

I don't owe anything on it so it is not a monthly drain other than
insurance. It seems logical to not annual it until someone has interest
in it. It also seems logical not to do the AD until such time as it is
sold. This would also keep the AD "fresh" for another 36 months upon
      sale.

Are there special issues with a plane that is "moth balled"? I know it
doesn't do a machine well to not be run.

I would appreciate any and all input.

      Don

When I placed my Shrike with Gary Gadbury in Tenn. last September he was
representing 2 others. Now he is representing 7 that are listed on
      Controller.

I have had no offers since I placed it with him. The main motivation
was to get it out of another Michigan winter and put it where I wouldn't
      be tempted to fly it.

The main motivation to sell it was the loss of my local mechanic/friend.
Unless one has a wonderful relationship with a mechanic the complexity
of the aircraft can be overwhelming emotionally and financially.

      Dear Folks,

I am considering buying a US made airplane that is registered in Canada.

The issues are about the same as putting a car in long term storage. When
it comes out, a lot of things will break.

Even if you pickle the engines, moisture will still accumulate in various n
ooks and crannies due to stagnant air and general lack of movement. Metal-o
n-metal surfaces will tend to bind, and of course anything hydraulic will b
egin to corrode and leak. Brake cylinders are especially vulnerable to pro
blems. And props very quickly dry their seals and begin to corrode. And ins
truments, esp gyros, will suffer accelerated failure. The battery will fai
l from idle storage within a few months.

You won't be able to demo the plane when it is out of annual, and you shoul
d inspect and relube the plane often, anyway.

In addition, there are a number of planned maintenance items that accumula
te regardless of whether the plane is active or not. ELT batteries, ADs
on the props, especially, annual, transponder check, static system check,
      etc.

The least expensive way to manage the airplane is to fly it (in annual) for
at least =BD hour every two weeks or so. And make sure to change the oil
at least every 120 days (so that acids coming out of solution in from the
oil don't corrode the engine). That way the systems will remain healthy. T
he money spent on annuals and insurance will be amply paid back, plus you a
t least get to remember why you bought it.

      All,

I have a "newbie" type of question.

What are the issues if I decide to put the airplane in "storage"? It is co
ming up on annual in March and the spar AD is due in April. The annual ins
urance is $4500 and is due in July.

If I find a hanger to store it in until the market strengthens or someone h
as interest in purchasing it, would it be flyable for demonstration if it i
      s out of annual?

What could I expect to pay for inside storage on a monthly basis?

I don't owe anything on it so it is not a monthly drain other than insuranc
      e. It seems logical to not annual it until someone has interest in it. It
also seems logical not to do the AD until such time as it is sold. This w
ould also keep the AD "fresh" for another 36 months upon sale.

Are there special issues with a plane that is "moth balled"? I know it doe
sn't do a machine well to not be run.

I would appreciate any and all input.

      Don

When I placed my Shrike with Gary Gadbury in Tenn. last September he was re
presenting 2 others. Now he is representing 7 that are listed on Controlle
      r.

I have had no offers since I placed it with him. The main motivation was t
o get it out of another Michigan winter and put it where I wouldn't be temp
      ted to fly it.

The main motivation to sell it was the loss of my local mechanic/friend. U
nless one has a wonderful relationship with a mechanic the complexity of t
he aircraft can be overwhelming emotionally and financially.

      Dear Folks,

I am considering buying a US made airplane that is registered in Canada. T
he owner says that it has previously had an "N" number. That seems to make
a difference. I have a bunch of info from AOPA on how to go about this bu
t if anyone has experience and would like to share it I would be most grate
ful. I doubt most folks want all the info so it might be best to respond o
      ff site. daniellfarmer@yahoo.com

      Thanks
