Hello "sr14572",
More thanks!
These were 'obviously' now taken after many more mods (all recorded) were
installed by the Aircenter Inc.
Now a "Shrike-Alike" 500B!!

Hi Morris,
N37CK was converted from a 500A to a 500B on July 13th 1964 and, to be a bit
nit-picky, the engines were IO-540-E1A5.
And in CommanderLand, no information is "useless information" ;-)
Not visible in Peter's shot, but it has also had a forward cabin door
installed.
Another mod. Is the Miller nose, but that's fairly obvious!!
Best Regards,
Barry

Peter: On examination of the pictures of N37CK, it was produced as a 500A,
but was converted to a 500B, which is Lycoming IO540B1A5 powered. Just some
useless information.
Do you have the pictures posted of the fly-in & Evergreen museum? I lost my
camera with them, before I could download them. Best regards, Morris

This is a pretty good read. I hope it is accurate.
Roland Gilliam AC 500 6291B
From: jpurner@100dollarhamburger.com
Subject: RE: B52
Glad too. Heck I=92m flattered you asked!!!!
B-52 and You!
The B-52 is the most enduring example of an actively flying war machine. It
came online in 1952 and has played a major role in every war or skirmish U
ncle Sam has been involved in since it first taxied down the flight line. S
ome serial numbers are today being crewed by the great-grandchildren of the
men who first flew them. Oddly=2C these old birds are today among the most
advanced weapon systems in the skies. The airframe has undergone only slig
ht modification since 1952 - beefed up spars and advanced wing tips mostly.
The propulsion systems have been upgraded several times to increase speed
and range. The avionics and instrumentation bear no resemblance at all to t
he =91when new=92 panel. All of the weapons systems=2C both offensive ad de
fensive have been upgraded many=2C many times. What remains constant is the
B-52=92s airframe=3B it really hasn=92t changed much at all.
The result for Uncle Sam has been a huge cost savings. Rather than phasing
in a new bomber every few years and sending the old one to the aluminum shr
edder=2C the B-52 has simply been upgraded=2C modified and improved by addi
ng new propulsion=2C avionics and weapon systems. The savings from this app
roach have been enormous and come at no loss of air superiority. The B-52 i
s a state of the art weapon today just as it was in 1952.
Amazing!
The story of the B-52 relates directly to the buyers market we are seeing i
n general aviation in the current economy. Airplanes are merely huge basket
s of parts glued together to make a machine that flies. Each part plays a u
nique role in one of the aircraft=92s three major elements: the airframe=2C
the propulsion system and the avionics/instrumentation panel. They are equ
ally important but not equally costly. The most expensive of the three is t
he airframe. It is also the most static. High engineering and development c
osts are offset by long production runs. When you have a winning airframe y
ou stay with it and put your R&D money into powerplants=2C avionics and ins
trumentation.
The top selling aircraft that roll out of the Beechcraft=2C Cessna and Pipe
r factories today were first offered for sale more than fifty years ago. Th
e reason is simple. It is hard=2C sometimes impossible to improve on a near
perfect airframe. Just as the B-58 =91Hustler=92 failed to replace the B-5
2 =91BUFF=92 nothing has come along to replace the venerable Cessna 172. It
is a near perfect design for a four place trainer that also serves as a gr
eat short range cross country aircraft. The powerplant has been upgraded as
has the panel and the creature comforts of the cabin but the airframe is b
asically the same one that first climbed into the air in 1958. If you need
a little more speed and no more than four seats=2C think 182. The Bonanza h
as long been the first choice for those needing six seats=2C good speed and
acceptable range. What about a Cherokee 6 or Saratoga or Mooney? They are
all great airframes that have each reached their design peak. My point is t
hat the really great airframe solutions designed for YOUR mission have been
around for a long time and nothing is likely to appear soon to replace the
m. So buy one with confidence but=85=85=85=85=85.
Used is a MUCH better deal than new. If you currently own a Cessna 172 it m
akes perfect sense to invest in upgrading its engine=2C avionics and instru
mentation. On the other hand=2C it would be an odd use of money to buy a ne
w 172 as a replacement for the one you currently own. That is why Cessna is
able to sell only a handful of brand new ones each month. There is no diff
erence in the airframe of today and those of yesterday=3B even many=2C many
yesterdays. The same is true of the Bonanza. The A-36 airframe is identica
l to that of the current production G-36. What is different is a fresh coat
of paint=2C a new interior and a glass panel. That=92s it! The airframe is
identical!!!! The same is true in the Piper world. A great example is the
Saratoga. Why buy a new one? Makes no sense!
If you are thinking of changing out your airframe for something bigger or f
aster=2C the problem you=92ll face is selling your old bird. Today is just
not a great time to be a seller. By the time your airplane is salable once
again the prices of what you=92d like to own will also have gone up. It=92s
the rising tide problem. All boats get lifted=2C so you remain in the same
relative position=2C at least on a percentage basis. On a dollar basis you
lose=2C as 20% of a bigger number is a much bigger number. When the 172 yo
u want to sell gains $10=2C000 in value=2C the Bonanza you want to buy will
climb by $30=2C000. Waiting to upgrade causes your dream to drift further
and further away.
What I am about to write will seem strange (very strange=2C actually) but t
hink about it a while before you send me a =93John=2C you=92re as dumb as a
rock=94 email.
This is the best time to become a TWO aircraft owner. If you currently own
a Cessna 172 (for instance) and need a faster cross country machine=2C keep
your 172 and buy a used Baron B55 (for instance).
You=92ll make money twice. A few years from today the price you get for tha
t 172 will really make you smile but not nearly as widely as you will when
you get around to pricing Barons a few years from now.
Try to buy your dream machine with a nearly run out engine and later replac
e or overhaul it when the FAA finally decides the fuel issue. You=92ll want
to change to a power plant that burns whatever the world will then be sell
ing. Keep things glued together until you know. DO NOT upgrade the panel an
d DO NOT look for a ship with an updated panel. You=92ll have to throw it a
ll away very soon.
The world of avionics is about to change as the FAA brings ADS-B online. Wi
th it comes a REQUIREMENT for at least a transponder capable of transmittin
g your aircraft=92s information to the FAA=92s NextGEN equipment. The new s
ystem promises to replace radar and ILS. Your new transponder will constan
tly transmit your aircraft=92s information package including altitude and p
osition. To do that=2C it must talk to your ship=92s GPS. The ADS-B system
will return to you the location of nearby aircraft and weather information
for graphic and textual display. Hence=2C you will also need an ADS-B recei
ver and a multifunction display capable of using the data it gathers. What
would be heartbreaking would be to invest in currently acceptable boxes onl
y to have to pull them in a short time and throw them away. WAIT on the pan
el upgrade.
Short version:
You will be able to sell your current airplane in a couple of years for twi
ce what you will get today=3B conversely you can buy an airplane today for
half what it will cost in a couple of years. You can put your stack of chip
s into the stock market or real estate and watch it dwindle or you can buy
a popular aircraft and watch its value grow.
There is no doubt that the demand for GA aircraft will increase as more and
more business people make the switch from the strip search=2C pat down lin
e to the pleasure of personal air travel. You can take that to the bank.
What if you don=92t own an aircraft today? Buy one! Whatever you can afford
and plan to do what the Air Force has done with the B-52. Keep it forever
and upgrade its power plant and panel when necessary as your budget allows.
Even a Cessna 150 can be a great travel solution for trips of less than 30
0 miles. I bought one of those in 1990 for $7=2C500. Today the same plane g
oes for twice that in the worst economic downturn since the Great Depressio
n. You can=92t lose money investing in an airplane=2C especially if you tim
e your purchase and plan on keeping it for the long haul.
To quote Warren Buffett=2C =93Buy when others are scared and sell when they
=92re greedy.=94
Now is the time buy an airplane!!!!!
The best deals are on twins and fire breathing=2C fuel gobbling high perfor
mance singles but the sales (not asking) prices of 172=92s=2C 150=92s Chero
kee=92s and V-tailed Bonanza=92s are also amazingly low. Find the ship you
want and make an offer you can afford. You=92ll be very happy with the outc
ome.
Great airframes never die=3B they just get new powerplants=2C paint jobs=2C
interiors=2C avionics and instrumentation.
Fly some place today ' you=92ve earned it!

Hey Bert,
I am on to this one, I signed up to the "backcountrypilot.org" list (a
process that took 2 days) and I've dropped a line to the guy who took
the photo... meanwhile I received an answer from a total different guy
about another abandoned Commander in Alaska (I've also asked for a
photo) we'll keep you posted.
Here is his response: Sent: Wed Dec 01, 2010 8:12 pm
... I thought I'd mention an Aero Commander that's parked in
Talkeetna, Alaska (PATK). Not sure the registration or model- sorry.
But I've seen it there over the years. The other place I've seen a few
of them is in Canadian fire-fighting operations. In Dryden, Ontario,
specifically (CYHD).
Cheers,

Bert, Thanks for your Denali 560E, good to know it's still
"certified"... may be it'll be resurrected one of these days!
Barry thanks for the original photos of #211 you sent them to me a
couple of years ago but it's always a pleasure to look at them again.
The funny thing is that one of the owners posing under the back wing
just looks like my Dad!... I guess Commander owners have something in
common in a surreal way...
I am resending my Dad's straight 560 and I'm also putting up a link
with other random photos taken at the time (poor quality since they
are all from prints) but also you should be able to read the comments.
This Christmas I am going to see my Mother and will check more family
albums and boxes to see if I can find a picture of YV-515P. From
Picasa you can all download anything that you want and I'm pretty sure
it's the same quality as my originals; if you have problems let me
know and I'll attach at least an original as well.

Hi Tylor,
Thanks for sharing the photos, hope JB answered about the Cleveland
Brakes, hard to tell from the photo for me at least...
Just looked at your other photos and I downloaded the
"Hannay-20Aero-20Commander," what a great photo! What's the story? do
you know any of these people or was this an original for publicity?
I would put $ down that's a straight 560! any takers?
thanks!

Hi Tylor,
Thanks for sharing the photos, hope JB answered about the Cleveland Brakes,
hard to tell from the photo for me at least...
Just looked at your other photos and I downloaded the
"Hannay-20Aero-20Commander," what a great photo! What's the story? do you
know any of these people or was this an original for publicity?
I would put $ down that's a straight 560! any takers?
thanks!

The price has come down due to metal in the oil. ?? unconfirmed.

Tylor,
I will share this one with the rest of the gang and specially if
Ricardo is somewhere "listening" on the chat or any of the Otaola. I
met what I think is the patriarch, not sure though, but Francisco
Otaola is the one who knew my Dad.
I suspect Ricardo is the son and he would not remember me since we
were both young at the time. His father? Francisco Otaola knew my Dad
and flew together and as Commander owners kept on sharing mechanics
and notes (I tagged along a couple of times) on YV-T-JTO (later
YV-1611P), a '62 680F #1214-112 now is YV1611 and correctly so has
been owned by the family since new and now unfortunately is on the
market for $300K...
My pilot buddy down there (I usually fly to my research sites) was
going to introduce them to me again, but YV-1611 was flying when we
look for them; tragically my friend died in a motorcycle accident and
we never made contact.
It seems to be in great shape, (has changed paint scheme since I knew
it of course). By the way, in this site you'll see that there are 9
Turbo Commanders based in Venezuela for sale... just to show that if
you want you can properly maintain a Commander down there as well.
Thanks for bringing back fond memories Commanders! and sorry to see
her go...
