I was always under the impression that a biplane's wings were staggered wither negatively (as in the Beech Staggerwing) or positively (e.g. Tiger Moth) so the bottom and top wings do not interfere with each other, so negating some lift. However, looking at a picture of the Antonov An2/An3 Colt, there is no noticeable stagger. Does the stagger negate lift conflict? Or was I wrong in my thinking? I do understand that the stagger changes the centre of lift on the wings, that it improves stability, and so on, but do unstaggered wings interfere, even to a slight degree, with lift generation? Thanks in advance.
