The oil temp climbs slowly beyond 200 degrees. This is especially true when the outside temps are greater than 75 and when the RPMs are over 1800. There is 15 hours on the engine since new rings and crank, 220 SMOH. The CHT during climbout goes to 400 or slightly higher and comes down to 325-350 at 1800 RPM. I have Phillips 20W50 oil now, having run straight mineral oil for 7 hours (the oil pressure was a little low with the 30 weight oil but now is good). I opened up the front inlets openings(this brought the CHTs down but not the oil temp), Installed a 'Cool Collar' (w/ fresh air duct on the filter) ,which helped a little, Removed my bottom cowl flap completely, which helped a little again, and added a scoop to bring fresh air onto the sump, again this helped a little. But in 80 degree weather above 1800 it still climbs over 200. My question is, Do I add an oil cooler now or hope that break-in will bring temps down enough that I don't need a cooler. The engine is installed in a Zenair 601. I had been told that I should not need a cooler by numerous people. I have checked the gauge and it is accurate. Anybody have any advise?
