Acquired a block that is an RX (good number
according to WW's conversion manual) but it has a hole below the
lifters that I haven't seen on any other block.- Can somebody tell me
what the hole is for?

That is where the dipstick tube goes in a FC corvair. RX is a
replacement case that had holes and bosses for all various models of all
years.

That is for the oil fill tube on the corvair van. A 1 1/16 freeze plug is how I
will seal the one I have.

Thanks for the reply Roy.- It did cross my mind that it was the oil fill
tube but I'd never seen it before.

I have a corvair engine with the numbers William Wynne calls for, and I have had
it for about four years now. Now that I am ready to start building my engine
I am reading about installing a fifth bearing. I also see there might be a new
crank shaft available, 4340 billet. My question is, how much more will his
add to the cost of building a corvair engine? Are we starting to enter into the
same price range as a used 0-200?

Unless you have "connections" in the certified world, and many or most of us dont,
by the time you get the starter, generator, mags, harnesses, sparkplugs and
oil tank, plus a rebuildable core, your $10,000 overhauled O-200 quickly becomes
as expensive as a new Jabiru or Rotax. I tried this route answering ads in
Barnstormers.com. The cost of the MA3-SPA carb that WW recommends gives you
a taste of how expensive the rest of an O-200 can be.
